I would actually argue that the API alk is pretty accurate whereas the phosphate is way off.  I measure both of those with a Hanna checker and compared the results against my API kit a few times - the alk was almost dead on where the phosphate is nearly impossible to read.  And really as long as the alk has been stable it doesn't matter too much what the actual value is, does it?  As long as it's in the normal range of 7-12.
i would agree with this. I had a water sample tested by heal high school and the all was off by about .5 or less.with the api kit. I actually had all the api kits test and the ones that were off the most were phosphate and copper. Calcium was about .08 ppm off which I though was pretty good for api. PH was off by .1 as well.

The tank pH is 8.1 in the display tank and 8.0 in the sales tank. Salinity is abtad lower in the sales tank too.

Toronto bound. I understand your trying to help and I don't think your being rude.

i had very similar results, my api calcium test always was showing 400-420 and on 2 different red sea kits it was actually around 310PPM.. after i found this out and got things back in check was when i started having SPS success.. go figure ;-)

I just tested my calcium and alk last week thinking they might be high after removing a large colony and a few other pieces. I was surprised to see my alk at 7.1 and my Ca at 320.  Everything looked good and I was getting growth.  I think if everything is relatively healthy, it can handle parameters that are on the border of undesirable.  If things are stressed to begin with, and you add an additional stressor, maybe that pushed it over the tipping point.

Anyhow, hopefully you figure this out Aaron.

I caught the bastard tonight.  He can now wreak havok in my predator tank.  I am not sure I will ever sell another one of these to a reef tank.
