I was clearly poking fun at my own team on this one. Allways the bridesmaid, never the bride. We do very well in the regular season somehow on a pretty consistent basis. Yet always run out gas and flop during the playoffs....

All teams do the same thing, they take turns on an annual basis lol .  The Pens shit the bed last year getting swept into the dumpsters by Boston and out the year before from the flyers first round :/

No Glenn that wasn't an invitation. :)

lol  well apart from last year being what... half a season?and they still couldn't be consitant with that short season to get past the first round, this year will be like the majority of leaf fans had to endure for decades now,a decent start out the gate, mediocre at best play and by the all star break, all downhill

So I assume it's some gay-as-f*ck basketball thing that bettman is trying to force down our throats, but what is the deal with this wildcard shit?  I have no idea what's going on.  I assume when my bruins come in first place, that bettman can replace them with some shitty southern team that only sells 4 tickets per game?  I just can't figure out what's going on (I'm Canadian, I only understand hockey).

Top 3 from each division get into the playoffs,
Then from the remaining teams in each division one team is randomly chosen/ drawn from a hat

So yes the the absolute shit teams can get in the playoffs

-insert maple leafs suck jokes here-

Top three from each division are auto seeded 1-6 according to points and tie break for their respective conference, next the top two point teams move forward in the wild card slots (seeds 7 and 8)

The leafs actually stand a pretty good chance at making the playoffs this year as the Metropolitan Division is in complete shambles.... Philly still only has 2 points.... lol. Rangers and Captials should bounce back somewhere during the winter and Carolina I think will eventually snap and fall towards the middle of the pack.

Out of the Atlantic, Detroit and Boston are good locks for two of the top 3, but there still remains at least 1 free spot for third which the Leafs, Ottawa, and Montreal would vie for and still two wild cards for top point teams that aren't auto qualified.

The West is gonna be a good fight till the very last day I bet. There are a lot of great teams with some really surprising upstarts especially teams like Colorado that I didn't think would be doing this well, this early.... Says something when you have 11 points in the Pacific and are in 5th (In a three way tie for 7th overall in the West), when if you were at 11 points in the East, you'd be tied for in 2nd or 3rd in each division or tied for 4th OVERALL....

so in other words a team that may very well be one point away from a division leader, (and in a playoff spot) could be bounced out for a random team?  Seriously?  SERIOUSLY?

Hell, don't even show up for games, just forfeit all of them, and hope for a wildcard win.  You'd win the cup because you would be incredibly rested with no injuries.    Holy crap someone's gotta shoot bettman

Well now I'm not sure, someone explained it to me that way but the way tony says it it makes more sense... I'll have to do some more digging but either way to old way is better, fuk bettman

I don't get tony's explanation because it had too many nubers and seeds and algebra.

If it needs math, then I think I might be in the majority not understanding it.  Someone just told me it's a football thing (or baseball or some other sport that doesn't matter).

Think of it this way, for example if the regular season ended and this is how the points fell in the East.

Atlantic:

Detroit: 86 points
Boston: 84 points
Ottawa: 82 points

Montreal: 80
Toronto: 78
Tampa Bay: 76
Florida: 74
Buffalo: 65

Metropolitan:

Pitts: 85
Carolina: 83
Islanders: 81

Columbus: 79
Washington: 77
Jersey: 75
Rangers: 73
Philly: 71

So top three seeds from each division get seeded 1 through 6 via their points REGARDLESS. (ties are broken through the same rules as last year) so the top 6 seeds would be:

1 - Detroit - 86
2 - Pitts - 85
3 - Boston - 84
4 - Carolina - 83
5 - Ottawa - 82
6 - Islanders - 81

Then the next two teams in the CONFERENCE with two highest point totals are seeded 7th and 8th

So:

7 - Montreal - 80
8 - Columbus - 79

Once again regular tie break rules apply. Both wild cards can come from the same division. It is not ONE per division. It is NEXT TOP TWO point teams from the conference as a whole.

And yes, I specifically made my example so Toronto would not be included (Although I do believe their chances are actually pretty legit)

Metropolitan:

Pitts: 85
Carolina: 41
Islanders: 39

Columbus: 37
Washington: 35
Jersey: 33
Rangers: 31
Philly: 29

So this could possibly happen (this year the way the Metropolitan division is playing...)

1 - Detroit - 86
2 - Pitts - 85
3 - Boston - 84
4 - Ottawa - 82
5 - Carolina - 41
6 - Islanders - 39
7 - Montreal - 80
8 - Toronto - 78

Just because of the seeding rank and the priority given to the top three seeds in each division. Regular playoff match ups apply. 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5, with home ice obviously going to the higher seed.

i get it but its friken dumb

No way, this is 100% better than the old way.

Top three teams in each division got auto seeded 1,2,3? and then the next 5 teams got 4 - 8? That was bullshit because of the incorrect alignment of the three divisions in each conference and the amount of times you had to meet the same teams over and over again vs. now where everybody plays more freely across divisional lines. The Southeast was a pathetic division and had 1 representative on more than one occasion in the past 5 years, Just Washington. They had a complete walk in the old system, free points beating the crap out of their own division that sucked donkey balls. It was brutal AND they got home ice. Going back to 07-08 Washington made it to the playoffs via this bullshit rule every year for finishing top of their garbage division minus one year where Florida (?!?) was first and they placed second.

Sure the new way has faults as well, but it will never be perfect.

I used to play hockey against Logan couture, it just was never fair. He played on Lucan while I played on Ilderton, always loved the rivalry between the 2 teams :) but man it's crazy seeing him in the big times now.

Knowing them from the waist down on his knees is not the same thing as what Jerry had, actually playing against an NHL'er.

Holy crap. It's almost 12:30. I would have figured all the leaf guys would be posting / cheering Kessel on for the Art Ross this year after that performance last night!

Oh and that you guys are gonna win the cup too! :p

From all of us in the Pacific Division, seriously though, thanks for cooling off those red hot Ducks for us. We tried to do you the same favor by beating Detroit, but we held em to at least only 1 point for you guys in the Atlantic.
