Bubble Magus Or Eshopps Skimmer?

I was all set to buy the Bubble magus curve 7 for my 120g reef and have now had the eshopps skimmers suggested to me. Both seem to have pretty good reviews. Any opinions on either of these brands? I had thought previously that the eshopps products weren't very good quality, but they use sicce pumps in their skimmers which is good to see. Any opinions appreciated!

I just acquired a Bubble Magus Curve 7. I cleaned it as the direction said that would cut down on the break in time. Within 2 hours after installing it, the skim was coming into the collection cup. It is dead quiet and the foot print is very small which is the biggest reason I wanted it.

What size is your tank?

I have the d9 with the neck cleaner it works great the one problem i had with the neck cleaner was that it was wired backwards and it was really loud eventually the motor burnt out. So bought a replacement on amazon for under 20 dollars

I know a lot of people don’t run eshoops , not 100% why maybe because bubble mag is talked about more I guess ? But I’ve had an eshopps skimmer on my tank for 4 years , (hob) they are pretty good for the dollar I’m not 100% happy with it, had it act up twice on me , could have been my own fault for being poor at cleaning it lol, just my 2 cents , other then that it skims very well , it’s the only filtration I have on my tank .

Just assembled everything. The reef octopus was definitely a lot heavier built! Thicker acrylic, ect. That being said, the curve 7 cost me less than the replacement bubble blaster pump for the reef Octo so I'm not surprised. Just running it in some vinegar/water for a bit and then we will get it in the sump and see how it does!

If it was the old style Eshopp I would say Eshopp, I would go with the BM. I have the Curve 9 and when I used it, its just a beast, sucks massive amounts of air and I would have to agree when they said it would do up to 350 gal. You could also get the neck cleaner for it, not the best made but price reflects that and it does the job as the necks tend to get quite dirty.

The worst thing I ever did for my tank was buy a bubble magus skimmer. Weak joints, bad motor (went through 2 shafts) that constantly required cleaning/restarting, and the in-skimmer design was incredibly annoying (especially if you have to re-start it when it chokes itself for no reason).

I bought a reef octopus and that thing has been rock-solid. Have only cleaned the impeller once, and the skimmer runs 12H on and 12H off cycles (time-of-use issue), which I NEVER would have been able to do with the magus. I think the reef octopus is about 5 years old now, still skimming strong. Would never ever ever buy a magus again.

Of course, just my $.02 and who knows RO might be using cheaper parts and construction now, everybody seems to do it...they get successful on their name, and then schlop it off with discount parts and slap the name on it.

I've always been of the mind set, buy cheap, buy twice. That being said, I had to spend $300+ on new mp40 wet sides when they decided to discontinue the bushing kits, the replacement pump for my 4 year old reef octopus would have cost me close to $400. I've had a m1 vectra nearly catch fire and the replacement has frozen up twice and had to be factory reset. This time I decided to take a chance on the bubble magus. The Pump has the same warranty as the reef octopus at 1/3 of the cost so I figured why not?[/QUOTE]

I am surprised, when I got mine they where so new no one heard of them and I must say I did need to get new impeller right from the start, but earlier I took the BM 9 off the self and replaced what I was running after I did a nice clean and within 20 min. I had big bubbles popping and in 45 min. I had neck full of foam puffing up to the lid. I can't speak for the other models but the I can for the original 9 not the DC and its just a beast. If it was not for the stuff of the side of the Vertex 150 or RO 150 INT. either would sit inside the Curve 9. The foam/bubbles inside the body is so dense that it has a white colour that is like the white adjustment tube.

I do remember that the BM skimmed the water fine, it's just that say once a week, it would be "off" and I had to remove and dismantle the pump. Now that I recall... the pump ended up leaking a ton of current into the tank, and it was a known problem with the motor (and the hard angle to the cord when installed). There was no Bubble Magus website, customer service or anything, so everything had to be found through dealers and a lot of hunting. All in all it was just a PITA.

The RO skims insanely well, right from day one. I can dial it to dry skim incredibly easily, and as I said it never ever needs service (knock on wood). In fact I ordered a ceramic shaft for the pump "just in case" but I still have it in bubble wrap. Like I said, who knows if they have cheapened out their lineups, it seems like every company does it sooner or later, but for now I'm a huge fan :)

I think earlier bubble magus skimmers had problematic pumps, but they eventually switched to a different brand or model (don’t remember exactly). Maybe you had one of the older ones? I had a curve 9 and loved it, no problems whatsoever.
