I buy almost exclusively over the Internet and have been for many years.... Eventually your gonna run into this situation.... You can blame the company or companies all you want but in reality they are all vulnerable to this threat. If you want to reduce the risk then your only option IMO is to stop purchasing online or doing any online banking..... But even then this will not make you 100% except.... There are still other ways they can get your info....My credit card has been compromised over a dozen times, I've experienced identity theft twice, one of my online banking accounts was hacked, my paypal was hacked twice (this is the only time I never recovered all the $$ fully, so you can believe PayPal is safe all you want, but it is far from the truth), and my Home Depot credit card was compromised once too.... That's all I can remember off hand.... Might be more too lol
Just this week somebody has been trying to log into my CanReef forum account but got the password wrong enough times that the account was locked out....
So far I haven't seen any fraudulent transactions on my CC, even though I did purchase through BRS in January..... None of my electronic devices would allow the transaction to go through (kept getting an error) and so I had to call and place order over the phone. IMO BRS has been rather decent about the whole matter.... There are many companies out there (and by many I mean most) that will not go through the efforts BRS is to correct this issue and help those who were affected.

I ordered a new credit card with a new number. That should put an end to this bullshit. I also changed my email password so hopefully that clears up any loose ends. Frustrating to say the least to have to worry about this garbage.

Prepaid visa cards are getting really popular now to. But the fees are still a little high, they normally have a $5 activation fee, plus more fees.

The fees are high because of one reason....supply and demand.... They know people are buying these to use for themselves in the hopes it will offer better protection and possibly even keep them an anonymous buyer.... And so why not see just how much ppl are willing to spend in order to have this "security"

The joys of shopping online. You always have to deal with that garbage. Some people are lucky and never get hit, others get hit multiple times...As noted above [emoji57]

Yes, it really is just luck.... Or bad luck maybe ;)
Oh yea I forgot to mention that my bank card was compromised like 12 years ago or so.... It was when thieves first starting targeting banking machines and using their own card readers and cameras to get your info. I still remember having to go to the police station and they laughed at me in disbelief. I had to get them to call CIBC Security Officers as well as the RCMP a before we were even on the same page. Actually, my most recent identity theft came about 2 years ago and of course back to the police station. The OPP at the location I went to did not even know or understand what identity theft was LOL. Again, I had to get them to call VISA services and apparently that day the officers learned of identity theft for the first time haha
All this adds up to an understanding for me of why Internet crime is extremely popular.... One, it's easy for the thieves. Two, the defense against it....well.... You all seen the defense.... Basically letters of apology lol. And 3, the laws surrounding Internet crime have been very vague or non existent for some time. Recently, this has been changing though....

wouldn't the world be a better place if these great minds put their talents to something constructive...

Some have.... Some extremely intelligent hackers formed anonymous groups on the Internet over the years in order to "monitor" or "protect" the public. However, the fact is that they are still "hacking" to get this information and therefore are committing a crime. The authorities have sought them out and most have now landed jobs working with the authorities to "hack" legally if that is possible. I guess anything is possible when you are the authority lol

I've never heard of Paypal getting hacked, individual accounts maybe but some people use pretty weak passwords and the same password everywhere. I have a list of about 40 passwords, my BRS password wasn't used anywhere else and now it's gone, my Paypal password is very strong and unique to Paypal. I purchased 3 times from BRS during the hack but haven't had any problems, I think I will look into the free services they are offering.

I think its all a sense of false security... nothing is safe....people design systems to keep hackers out...what makes anyone think that there are hackers that are just as smart or smarter to get in.....the info is out there its just a matter of catching it and decoding it

If my iPad would allow me to do a copy and paste (stupid ipad lol) I would simply copy and paste you all the articles of PayPal hacking from Google. There was a guy last year who uncovered a major security flaw in PayPal which could have led to a major issue....can't remember his name though....I'm sure Google will find it :)
PayPal is IMO not a good company to deal with when it comes to any kind of security breach that involves you or your money. If you again do a google search of people who have dealt with them regarding these issues, you will see what I mean. They have been ignorant on many occasions of security issues and I don't trust them to release an honest statement or declaration of any hacking involving their business.

Bottom line here and why I'm posting so much on this is because I have been affected numerous times and I still feel bad or like I need to make more ppl aware of just how unsafe it can be in hopes they can possibly better protect themselves or atleast just be aware and know your rights (read the fine print) as a consumer.

One last thing lol.... If you have a banking account attached to PayPal I highly suggest you remove it and attach only a CC
