Best to buy new? Where is the best deal for the money or are they all the same?
Most used ones will need the probes replaced. At that point you will probably paid more then new. Plus new comes with warranty. I am all for used equipment, but my Apex is/was new.

Unfortunately I've always found the apex stuff goes on sale Black Friday.

I agree with Torx. I'd buy it new. It's a pretty expense item if anything goes wrong with a used unit.

Yep I googled it and that was amazon Canada and all their prices on apex are inflated. Black Friday is always away for deals.

Well I am new to the saltwater side. But have been in the freshwater side for close to 30 years. I agree with you that one of these could save hundreds if not a $1,000 if something went south.

@TORX, I was talking about ReefAngel not ReefKeeper.
@Nonuser - For USD289 you get the basic setup: Controller, Relay Box (8 controllable outlets), pH probe, Temp probe, 2 float switches (ATO), cables, etc. I would recommend adding the wifi module (USD129) for control over the internet (from smartphones, tablets, computers). From here you can add anything you want based on your needs. Support is excellent on there forum. The system is based on Arduino, the source code is open source so you have the option of changing the code as you wish. The sky is the limit. You can easily replace the parts in case you have a problem. (only USD75 for controller board - happened to me after the controller took a bath:-()
I'm not sure how to put it... if you want full control, like to customize it, understand programming, are DIY and enjoy tinkering with your toys, then this is excellent and can make it way more powerful than any out of the box system. Otherwise I would go with Apex or ReefKeeper. It's like DIY LED Lights (if you know what you are doing :)) or buying out of box LED Lights and be stuck with their limited configuration. Or, for example, you BBQ a steak the way you wanted it or go to a good restaurant and always get the same few good choices. I hope the summer is coming soon. :)
I'm not pushing ReefAngel and I agree that Apex is excellent. It was actually my first choice originally.
Anyway, any controller is better than none. :)

Just to confuse you more I would look into the profilux

If you want to be sure any add ons or modules will stay compatible with your controller then Profilux is the one.

- reliable
- easy to program (no coding)
- new equipment is compatible with older models
- limitless possibilities

Profilux is the original, every thing else is just a knock off. ;)

If you can come to Hamilton I can give you an easy walk through on the basics and show you just how easy this controller is.

Profilux mini is a good option you can find it here

I know several people that after going to macna 2016 have sold off there apex completely and switched to the Profilux

My Profilux was doing what the apex does 5 years before the apex was even heard of, this controller is number 1 outside North America. (And that is only due to marketing)
