Why Every Lfs Doesn't Have One Of These I Have No Idea

I have seen this before but have never seen mention of it on here with my fellow reef brethren
This is an all in one unit that gives you a readout of everything that any average or even above average saltwater guy would test for. I would be in my LFS way more often if they had one of these thrive units

I saw these last year at macna on YouTube. They are really cool. It'll likely never happen seeing one of these in a lfs here. I know of one that would charge 250 bucks per test. Lol.

The biggest reason it won't likely end up in most of the stores we frequent... It is going to be telling you to buy the Thrive products.

My guess, if you want this in your store, you are going to pay to stock a whole line of products you may not like/want/be able to afford (shelf space costs money) etc.

Like J_T said, that thing would be huge overhead. It would be far cheaper for a store to just do free titration type tests for you, and I bet if you asked, some of them would. Testing takes what 30mins? I bet you would find it is more of a nuisance to take water in to get tested then to just do it at home late at night.

would hate to see the price per sample im sure having a tech come in to check unit and adjust would be pricey as well besides my probes and test tubes have been doing just fine for years......plus how will it stop cross contamination if someone braught in some nasty water unless machine is cleaned i could end up with it

We looked into it and it make no sense finically.

They have a large upfront cost + high monthly fee.

Even if we broke even we were planning to get one, just to get people in the door but it would never happen.

Still cannot get over the fact that some hate to test their own systems.

Testing is part and parcel of this hobby.

Sure, should you be concerned with your system and need a second opinion, that is what a good LFS will do. Verify your testing.

I enjoy cleaning the glass. Gives me a chance to be even more observant of what is happening. Same goes for water changes and the sump.

Should you detest doing those as well, heck, you can always frequent Ripleys in TO more often.

I looked into these Thrive Testing machines when they first came out and was really excited to be the first in our area to have one. Unfortunately after finding out the cost involved in not only getting one but maintaining one I quickly changed my mind. There is really no way a store could make money on these and it would be very difficult to break even.
I've talked to a couple people in the industry and they've told me that the initial ones in stores have been riddled with problems.
Hopefully in time the issues will be worked out and the price will come down as I agree, they would be awesome to have!

I agree my doors are open to any fellow reef that is interested in LEDs as none of our lfs have or use them. I am always helping my neighbour whether it be jugs of RO/DI water or double checking his parameters as he is colour blind. I was just pointing out the fact that living in Windsor you rely on fellow reefers for frags or road trips. Our LFS are horrible. Anyone who has been here and to Corbrets knows. And Onecansay there has been members who have had frag swaps at there house and it was a great time and awesome meeting the people we have come to trust here.
