asterina starfish
they are generally harmless but can get numerous

yup, that's what they are, harmless but they can get to be a PITA when they multiply... on my first tank when they appeared I was so happy, I thought that my star fish was reproducing...

There seems to be one or a few species I have seen that will go after zoanthids. If you have zoas just keep an eye on the number of polyps. Some will only go after a certain colour zoanthid and leave others right beside alone.

The only true real fix is to purchase a harlequin shrimp, but unless population is out of control the shrimp will eat them all and then starve.

Lowering excess nutrient levels can help too.

if hey are constantly on glass or rock they are the algae eaters and ok as long as not plague proportions then like unibob said get a harlequin shrimp but they only eat starfish thats it. if its always on or near coral dont risk it only way to distinguish the two apart is under a microscope.

Buy a harlequin and a chocolate chip starfish. Keep chocolate chip in sump( NOT reef safe). Once harlequin looks after the asterina starfish. Cut a leg off of chocolate every 1.5 weeks and feed to harlequin. They are really cool looking shrimp, but ONLY eat starfish and will starve and die once population is gone. The chocolate starfish will regenerate legs if you have the proper parameters in tank.

I thought about these in the past and will probably do some in the future, like when the kids are gone. It would be too traumatic for them to see the star fish tank. In all honesty, it is no different then the other foods we feed them. Most have fish in them, only difference is that this food is alive at the time we feed it. The star fish will grown another limb and the circle of life continues.
