Although some have had (are having) success with HOB fuges, I've had poor luck with them as they need continuous cleaning otherwise they can become a "messy" proposition. Sumps perform better than HOB refugiums in my experience. Cleaner, neater and easier to maintain
Have you dosed beyond regular parameters ? Any of the occupants or CUC missing in action ? (any decaying matter can cause potential issues). Perhaps more flow is needed ? I can loan you an MP10 if you want to experiment
Having said all of this, it may come down to the fact that you may never be sure of the cause. This hobby can be a beautiful siren or a cruel mistress

Thanks sam for the offer.... flow could be the issue and I'll address that tonight . I do have an extra power head kicking around in storage. So I'll give that a try. Yeah I hate my canister filter ... I'm thinking I may switch to a sump some time in the new year after I recover from Christmas lol. I'll be upgrading to a better protein skimmer shortly as well.

That sucks. Sorry to hear. Hopefully you can figure out what it was to at least learn something from the experience to help in future.

Your water must be fine if your nems are ok that's so odd! Snails too are as sensitive as shrimp almost. Has any rock work shifted at all?

Think back a few weeks about anything you might have changed or done recently.

Cleaning with tap water and not rinsing with treated prime water can be pretty bad.

May have been doing something around the house and forgot to wash your hands or something fall in.

Any pets that can get at tank?

Did power go out overnight?
