in my 3 chamber sump my cheato/calurpa is in the center chamber.. I have been having issues with po4.. today while doing my scheduled water change I noticed that I had red slime on my cheato.. I've also noticed that it doesn't tumble that much if any.. should I put a small power head in there to keep it moving and what do you guys use...

In my frag tank the chaeto just sits in a basket clamped to the back of the tank. It doesn't tumble...it gets the odd spot of Cyano on it...and it only gets light spill from the full spectrum led on the tank 12 hrs.per day. I pull out a large handful every week when I do water changes. Previously in the 180gal reef, it was set up to tumble, had 24/7 plant specific lighting and all it did was gradually melt away until I replaced it and tried again....over and over...
IME what you read about keeping chaeto isn't entirely accurate....

In my 200gallon it suddenly took off when I switched the 6500k t5's for heavy blue led's. I know this is not what most people say should be the case but that's how it is for me...

In the past I manually moved mine every day, that's what I'm doing now.It needs 8 hours of dark to promote growth, any thing less then 12 hr will cause it to go sexual from what I know.

mine is growing, I feed it to the fish 2 times per week and have given a lot of it away.. it did have some cyano (red slime) so that's why a asked if it should be tumbled.. same thing in the big tank...there just doesn't seem to be a lot of movement in that section of the sump...

I'm just using an LED Spot light, (The kind that go in those outdoor motion detectors) I run the Light 24/7, it fills my sump every month, then I cut and toss.

I just manually rotate the cheato once in awhile when I'm under the tank

I only rotate mine when I remember. So maybe once a month. I don't have a lot of flow in my sump except i let my returns from my tanks to tumble into the water. I do take a turkey baster at least once a week and blow the detritus into the water column. This lets me mechanically remove it via filter floss or sock that I add during maintenance and this allows the macro algae to catch and use the detritus as a fuel source. I would look at your bulbs if you are getting bad slime in the sump. But some in the sump doesn't hurt.

I measured my PO4 last night and I got 0.06. Is this high? My chaeto is in one of my AIO chambers, don't rotate them, and only turn on the light between 7 pm to 7 am. I use IM Magnafuge light.

Some videos on the net show airstones to tumble. while back I was able to buy some 2700k regular household led bulbs at Dollarama and they are great at growing macro
