Leaving air gaps between the U-Channel will help significantly for cooling.

Also its the shipping cost of heaving heatsinks from overseas or across borders that makes using DIY u-channel more cost effective.

Running almost 100%, maybe 95% on all 3 strings. Dialing down the driver just a hair has dropped the temps on the LED and driver.

Update:

A: I cut off the section of coral with the colonial hydroids, lost a few zoas though  :poop:

B: Played with optics. My fixture is only about 2" above the water line. Optics looked horrible when place on every LED. The RB and Red where strong spotlights.

I ended up removing the optics from the blue and UV string, I left them on every other white which looks nice. There is no 'spot lighting' per say, it makes a nice shimmer across the rocks.

C: Now that I have dialed up my lights, they do run warm. I can still hold my finger on the back of the uchannel. It is warm, but not hot. I have added my 120mm cooling fan and just laid it on the channel. It is cool to the touch. Will try to get a thermometer and measure the differences.

This makes me wonder why mine run so hot!? I checked again I have nothing crossed. L and N are correctly wired. Perhaps bc of the steel furring rather than alum u channel?

How do you like the polyp extension on corals? Have you noticed and increase? Decrease?

I did not like the look of the optics either. Very spot light.

Thanks for the build update awesome job I must say

with optics you need to be 8-12 inches above the water minimum ... depending on the tightness of the optic of course...

I would assume it is because of the steel furring rather than alum u channel not conducting heat the same.

Have not really notice a lot of change at this point. But I also changed the arrangement of everything. The colors are amazing and dont seem worse. My corals were in my sump for the last 2 weeks until my new lights came in. Should know more over the next while as I leave the frags in one spot.

+1 on that Neo. The results are exactly what I was expecting, but thought I would try anyways.

Absolutely agree with torx. Steel doesnt have nearly the same heat transfer charactoristics as aluminum. It doesnt conduct the heat as fast=more heat, and it doesnt radiate the heat off as fast=more heat.

Well they have been running for 2 weeks now. I have not seen any significant growth, but that is not related to the lights. There has been no die off. If anything the lights are making things grow. Just thought I would let people know.

There have been new sprouts on my green clove.
My Blastos has new polyps growing.
Does not appear to be any change in zoas at this point, however, I loose track of the polyps.

All other corals still look the same.

Not sure what is water quality related and what is light related, but still no complaints.
