I've used Calcium Reactors in the past, they work well when set up BUT they are finicky, It depends on what type you get obviously but over all my opinion of them is that they're not worth the trouble. Dosing on the other hand is cost effective, easy to use and controllable. Dosing can be automated, I think the Calcium Reactor needs to be added to the obsolete list.

calcium reactors are costly to set up and you need a reliable source for C02 tanks.

Dosers are easier and newer technology. The fear is that they get "stuck" on and continually dump a certain additive into your tank but sheesh, that fear can be applied to anything malfunctioning. So moot point.

hands down dosers are easier.

If your PH probe is working properly it will shut off the regulator which in turn shuts of the gas stopping anything from entering the tank. The system depends on a few functions to operate correctly. The probe sits in the affluent and reads the PH, When the PH is correct the regulator opens allowing a mixture of gas and water to enter the Calcium Carbonate chamber dissolving the Carbonate, It liquefies the mixture and drips into the tank.

The system works and worked well for many years but in time things change and get easier, Many Aquarists were drawn to these types of systems because they weren't the norm, They were expensive and required tinkering and some love this about the hobby. The mechanical part of it. a good system that worked was over 500 dollars for a double chamber of Calcium Carbonate then an excellent regulator and Bubble counter, Then there's a pump for circulating the tank water through the system, PH Probe with monitor, Precision Marine made a good one as well as Lifereef.

They still are quite common on many systems and I'll bet there's still a lot in use. I've used them before even had a PM and a LifeReef but I find it much easier dosing. I think a better question would be how many people have automated their dosing as apposed to manually dosing.

Bubble magus and Kamoer are two I have heard a lot of positive reviews about. I personally have a Kamoer and it works like a charm. Obviously the brs dosers are popular as well.

I recently got a kamoer doser. Very nice unit price is extremely reasonable and according to reviews has better build quality then the bubble magus

@ this time I am building a doser using Arduino and Adafruit parts. Should be able to construct each doser for about forty five bucks. Also will allow me to put each doser on it's own canister.

Ya', you can get a BRS doser for about 75 American but with a little effort you will get much better control with the DIY.

Just my 2 cents.
