To Any Maxspect Gyre Owners

I recently bought a 120 gallon tank off an member here and the tank has 1/2" thick glass. I currently have a Vortech MP40 and MP10 running on my 90 gallon. Ecotech suggests MP10's to be used on tanks no thicker then 3/8". Torx said he had no issue with MP10's on 1/2" thick glass but if I do I am considering selling off the MP's and buying a Maxspect Gyre. The tank it will be going in is 48"x24"x24" tall. Which Gyre do you suggest I buy. I do plan on keeping mostly SPS corals. Also do you like the Gyre? Or should I consider just getting another MP40? The tank will be set up in my basement living room so noise really won't be an issue as I can just turn the volume up on the soundbar if needed. I personally really like the Ecotech Vortech MP's but like what I have seen video wise on you tube from the Maxspect Gyres. I like the fact of needing just the one. How is the build quality of the Gyres? Do they seem like they will last long term? Also how is the controllability of them?

I'd say go oversized and dial back rather than undersized running at max.

As with all the maxspect products I have ever owned, it is A+

Thank you for your input Tony. So would the XF-150 be the one you suggest I go with if I do decide to go this route? Also it says that it is 11.8" long and the tank is 24" wide one of them would be all I need right?

If you and Tony both have that model and you have a 300 gallon and he has a 220 wouldnt the XF 150 be way overkill in a 120 gallon that's 48" long 24" wide and 24" deep? You guys both have pretty big tanks and only run it at 40%. I am guessing I would run it no more the 10% kind of seems like a waste or is my thinking off here? I was quite intrigued when I first saw a video of this thing about a year ago or so but because I already had the Vortechs wasn't going to be one of the first to buy one. But now that I am going to be setting up this 120 gallon tank and there is a chance my MP10 won't work with the 1/2" glass I am considering selling the MP40 and going with one of these. I would keep the MP10 for when I get around to setting up my frag tank.

I will say that trying to run the units above 50% increases the noise generated a fair bit, but that may be a result of the thickness of the glass as it is at the max thickness for the XF150. I will likely upgrade to the larger unit when released so that I can keep the output around 40% and the noise to a minimum. Given the noise factor I would lean on the side of overkill so that you have the flexibility to reduce the flow to 20-30% to keep the noise at a minimum. Unless of course noise does not factor into the equation.

On a side note the noise is not anything to worry about or shy away from, I only consider it as my overflows, return and skimmer are dead silent.

Yeah my 90 runs dead silent too the only noise I can hear is the hum from the Vortechs and that's only if the TV is off and even then it's not to the point where it drives me crazy at all. I guess if I do go this route I will grab the XF-150 and run it low. Thank you for all your input.

that was my recomendation as well. I'd rather run a bigger piece of equipemnt at 20-30% rather than a smaller one at max. The noise on mine has gone down substantially since I got the new rubber pads.

That's too funny yeah we do think alike. I have really liked the Gyre since I first saw a video of it over a year ago. Let me know how it is in your tank as I believe your tank isn't as big as Tony's or Reefgeeks.
