Boy that would put a downer on the trade! I am not sure where I stand on the matter though. On the one hand there are many questionable practices but on the other it's because our awareness and understanding of the oceans that leads to the passion for conservation...

In some countries, I would question the collection practices. But Hawaii has been very careful with what they have. They have by far some of the best governed farms in the world! I know from a talk Ret did a few years back, that when sustainability is being discussed in other countries, they reference how Hawaii does things.

There is a chart out there somewhere, it shows fish collected by region... Yellow tangs has its own bar there are that many collected. But even with that many collected, they are not "dwindling" to extinction. It also placed 3rd, or 4th on the chart for its quantity.

Its the same thing with peta people and hunting... aparently we are all just blood thirsty killers out to exterminate the world yet to be a successful long term hunter requires strong conservation ethics and animal numbers management... people are just brainwashed these days and prob think hawaii collects like thailand instead of checking into how regulated the farming zones are.... maybe they should look into upgrading their waste management facilities and waste water treatment cuz that run off has no effect what-so-ever lmao not to mention all the junkies leaving garbage everywhere as seen on dog the bounty hunter :) plus numbers of animals are dropping worlwide even where no farming so how do they explain that if their numbers drop is similar with farming.... sounds like they are a-ok to me

LOL, PETA... They just released their 2014 numbers for head office.... 1% adoption rate... All others put down, and a small number given to other shelters with no known results of the animal afterwards....

The biggest thing they are going after is the recreational fishing. The damage they do is crazy! But, when you look at the $$ Rec fishing brings in more... Thus... Find someone else to blame this mess on.

It is unfortunate how so many species are dying off these days, I think the rate was 3 or 4 species becomes extinct every hour on earth and 30% of the reefs have disappeared. Yet as everyone points out, action is usually not taken in the correct problem areas and although it gives the average person the idea that these changes will be making a difference it does not hault the deterioration of the planets diversity. IMO however there are some truly admirable efforts being made out there for the reefs for example there was an issue of coral magazine where they were talking about re-building reefs with aquaculturd corals in areas where there have been losses...

guess more effort is going to have to go to captive breading. I just got my hippo tang that was captive bread and raised and is amazing, acclimated in minutes. and captive bread fish are more hardy, and less susceptible to ich and marine head and lateral line erosion.
