I know everyone says tap water is terrible for saltwater aquariums. I also know of the odd person who uses tap water with no problems. When I do use it, I let it sit for awhile first (fill a large cooler and let it sit) then I fill a 4 litre water jug and add prime and marine buffer. Not sure how long I can do this till I start having problems. My tank does look clean right now, been running it for about 6 weeks now. I am going to start using  some ro/di water starting tommorrrow just to see if I can see a difference. Anyone else use tap?

You can use tap water and let it sit for a while, but it will still have compounding effects in your tank with every water change. The impurities (i.e. phosphate) will lead to bigger problems down the road. You an get away with it for fish-nly applications, but will run into issues with corals.

I don't think SPS corals like tap water, but it all depends on what you want to keep in your tank. I occasionally dump tap water in my tank with a conditioner, and haven't had major issues with my fish and soft corals. I can tell within a couple a days by the overall health of my tank when I use tap water versus RO/DI water.

90% of the time I use tap water and have never had problems.... but I do only keep LPS and softies, as said above if your going to be keeping sps then you better get a RO/DI unit along with all the other equipment you need to keep SPS. Id say though if your sticking to the "easy" corals then your method of sitting/treating/buffering tap water should be fine. i say this because I live North of the valley and I see your in Chatham which means your water plant Id assume takes water downstream of the plants which would have more "stuff" in it then my water in Sarnia has in it coming from the lake rather then the river.
Cheers!

I know that sarnia has more chlorine in there drinking water than pool water , but chathams ph is diferent, also chatham kent water contains a chemical they spray on corn, there was a test and this water makes frogs deformed after 5 years of being in it.
it cannot be removed from water and every year the ppm or ppt gets a lil higher.....
AND WE DRINK IT ! thanks chatham

I somehow doubt this. By chance were you visited by a person that wanted to test your water, only to end up trying to sell you a pricey ro system?
