Suggestions On Overflow

ok guys I need suggestions on my over flow. My small fish are going for a ride through the sump. I have fished clowns, chromis out of the overflow and I just found one of my gobies in the last chamber of the sump, swimming around the return pump. He seems very happy down there, honestly I have no idea how he made it that far. This sump has several baffles yet he made it through them all. Should I lower my water level a bit or is there something that I can put over the top of the over flow..I was thinking that maybe I could put a net over it or something, its a corner over flow. There are a couple of teeth missing so I put egg crate in the overflow but they are still getting out. Torx, did you have an issue like this?
Help, its too hard to get them out...

i put egg crate over top mine... has keept the eel and everything else out had a couple things go for a ride before.... only downside is they might end up on your floor instead of sump so really what one is better

Yes, a lid on the overflows would be the best option. Weird that those fish are jumping in there though. Egg crate is always a simple and cheap lid. Or of coarse @J_T could fit you an acrylic one.

I think it's not them jumping in but merely getting in from the flow thru where there used to be outlet pipe. I think need to fashion an upside down U over that location with a fine screen to prevent smallish fish from entering. Perhaps two pieces of eggcrate zip tied together to create a U then wrapped in nylon grape bag material?

I know the spot then. Probably don't need the nylon. 1/4 egg crate shouldn't let those fish through.

That's what I did with mine once I modified the overflow box for a different return

thanks guys, they are going through the egg crate.. I will contact jt to see what we can come up with, when I don't see a fish for a day I now look in the sump..

Just a thought. I bet if you measured the hole that someone like jt has scrap pieces they could drill a few holes in to allow water to pass thru, drain the overflow dry the inside and glue it to the inside, forever fixing the problem.

Its probably easier to fish them out of a sump then out of a overflow, no?

INot really, the gobie made it through 3 chambers and a bunch of half baffles. I found him in the chamber with the return pump (thank god there is a screen on it or he would have been hamburg going through the pump) I don't see this gobie very offen so I have no idea how long he was there and no it was not fun trying to catch him, they are very quick little fish..

there's this stuff called gutter guard - I've seen it in the dollar store. It might split the gaps left by eqqcrate by half or so. I like the idea of scrap acrylic drilled too...
