Just to show you how long I've been away  :)  I've managed to keep a bag of Southdown play sand all these years.

Did this fall out of fashion  for use as a Substrate?  Why?

I know... But I have a whole bag!  I've kept it and it's moved to 3 houses,  and made it through a divorce and new marriage.  I'm kind of attached to it!

Don't know..  I just remember when I was reefing many years ago... It was all everyone wanted to use!

I'm thinking SSB with seaflor special grade,  but just wanted to know why this had fallen out of favour

That's a good choice..,, it will also be much coarser so it won't get all stirred up by your fish and powerheads and cause a dust storm.....
I think this is the reason why sugar sized sand is no longer popular....especially your play sand cuz I think most would/should choose an aragonite sand over play sand

If it's aragonite then it would be ok IMO for silicate levels.....but like I said it will create dust storms and constant sand particles in your water column if you plan on having what I would consider adequate water flow for an sps dominant tank....
I currently have sugar sized sand it would not even stop to think about using a coarser sandbed next time....
Some would make an argument that you could use the sugar sized underneath but idk and wouldn't personally risk it especially if doing a ssb..... It's your choice.....

Seaflor it is... Was just wondering,  like many things,  this hobby has changed sooooo much!  T5 was "newish"  in North America when I got,  and GFO,  lol... Nope didn't exist!

Sandbox? Imaginary beach in the bathtub? Car litter? Weight and emergency traction for your car ?
Mix it with salt for your sidewalk? Lots of uses for it :D

I thought of pouring it on the floor, turning on my new T5 lights and laying on it like i was on the beach..
Maybe get rid of some of this season affective disorder  :) ;) :D ;D

you could use it as a remote sand bed or like me, have a refugium with a sand bed, the flow through a sump will not blow it around.

yup, its for sure its aragonite sand and it looked to be quiet popular in the 2000's , you can test to be sure buy dripping some vinegar on it, if it foams up its good to go.
