Well I'm going to look for a couple of tubes of Momentive RTV108 siliocone, seems to be the cat's ass when it comes to adhesion and strength. Amazon has literally one tube left, so if anyone knows where this stuff can be found...

Marineland tanks are all 1/4 or 3/8" glass with rims and bracing. I don't want that, that's why I got 1/2" glass :(

The glass is good, the overflows are fine, I just have to get the tank apart (!) and re-do the seals with new silicone. They had been clamped before and I'll do it this time with tape-only and see if I can get a bit more beef in the seams. Who knows I may become a master tank builder. :)

I do not know why it was clamped. Clamping can bow the glass to fit to other peice, (yes, glass bends, I know you know, but others may not) then straining the seals once the clamp is released and tank filled with water. Just let it do what it wants to do with tape. It will have a much better seal.

There was a big controversy online of "adhesive silicone" vs "silicone sealant". That said, is anyone going to Bigshows that could shuttle me a couple of tubes? His shipping is more than the silicone :)

I'm doing a 125 not a 500, and 1/2 inch glass not 3/8 so I'm probably overthinking it.

Gary didn't get back to me, I think I'm on my own on this.

Will do, I bought a spreader clamp today, should help keep some solid pressure on the tank while I work on the glue. I chipped the side panel a bit the last time I did this, so not looking to duplicate that.

Devil's advocate here... You could go acrylic. There are reasons not to... however one of the reasons to go acrylic is welded seams...

cheers

No, I manage to scratch glass fairly often, couldn't imagine acrylic.

I ordered a couple of tubes of silicone from bigshow, one of the side panels is already out, and yeah, it wasn't really attached. I'll post up a video at some point of just how weak the seam was...

right, nuff said...

I've built a glass tank or two in my day. Are you going to clamp it together ? use some sacrificial styrofoam and a gentle touch. Best of luck !

Cheers
