Role of Magnesium

Ok..I understand the basic principle of Magnesiums role,  but what i dont understand is why my mag has dropped 200pts in a week and my ca and alk have remain unchanged at 400 and 9 respectively.  What causes such a sudden uptake of magnesium?  I have read Randys articles but was hoping someone could explain in laymans terms :)

your test kit got contaminated?

your test kit got contaminated?

That's unusual. Either your water change water dropped it significantly (unlikely that much) or its test kit error. There would be no reason for such an increase in demand in your tank.

Would a 15% WC effect mag that much?! Guess ill have to test the next few WC's

Do you use Instant Ocean salt? I find it depletes my magnesium when i do a water change, but not that much

Btw, I think I was at your work today...If you work at LPD like I was led to believe.

Yeah I recently switched to IO reef crystals....u stayed on the main floor I hope?!  ???

Reef crystals should have plenty o magnesium.

Unfortunately i did get taken downstairs for a bit... Luckily it was just to the parking garage. Im doing some design work for the reno's.

I used the Salifert test....and I boosted back up to 1410ppm...I hope the test kit is right lol...or it could be crazy high!!

There is no reason to keep it that high. I keep mine between 1200 and 1400. I Know regular I has around 1200ppm so you reef crystals might be around that.
