The photo you posted above is going to take structural reinforcement.

Pillars: (works well for smaller pillars anyways)

Good tutorial

Anyways, youtube has lots of videos for tips and tricks.

Remember to be careful with taller structures. Drill holes and use PVC pipe to add stability for height and a base. Last thing you want is to get your tank going with all the corals and have things come crashing down and crushing fish or corals down the road.

Here are some of my pillar pics - early on, and the last one is recently.  I did my pillars by using a masonry bit and drilling through the rock, inserting a fiberglass driveway marker rod, and cementing with cistern cement.  Over time, the cement has degraded, leaving this crappy grey residue that gets everywhere. Rocks started splitting and my left pillar is half of my right one.  It definitely was a huge PITA but at the end of the day I'm happy how it looks now.  If I had to do it over again, I would do two islands instead of pillars.  I definitely wouldn't use the cistern cement.

Hey Jordan,

I think you have one of the nicest scapes going. How many pounds of rock did you use is your 120g?
Also what type of rock did you go with?

I think I started out with roughly 90 pounds and I think it is fijian.  The reason I say I think is because Darryl got it for me from another reefer when I started up my 55 about 5 years ago.  I added another piece or two, but I'd say I roughly have about 60 to 70 pounds in the display and maybe another 30 or so in the sump.

What do you mean by doing islands instead of pillars? what does islands look like? any pics to refer me to?

I'd have to look on RC for pic references, but basically what I mean is just a couple of rocks epoxied together instead of a stack.  More of a pyramid shaped island than straight up and down pillar that approaches the surface of the water.  Sort of what my left pillar looks like now.  Easier to place corals and not shade them out.  The two islands would be sort of minimalist... the look that is popular now and I think appealing is the u shaped scape with the two points toward the front of the tank.

if you take a look at my tank in members threads on my newest vid is basicly one island forms the whole aquascape... its more than ideal because of my pennisula style but im not sure it would work as well with a normal one sided tank..
