Does anyone know if you have to use there bus cables or can I use just a normal phone cord? I need it to reach my sump by display and 1 pc4 at my DT? I have another cord I found but just seeing if it would work or screw something up or what not.

I bet they use a different pin out.  If its RJ11 (phone connector) its not too hard to make up your own.  Im wondering if the wire gauge and length might be problem though.

Not familiar with the reef keeper, but most bus connector cables are meant specifically for the unit, changing this cord/extending can cause problems. If it is a normal rj-11(phone) or rj-45 you should be fine using a longer cord as long as like what Darryl said isn't different.

The cord is not the same as a phone line.  The bus cable is a straight through type cord... so pin1 on one side is pin1 on the other.
Phone cords are not wired in this way i dont think.  You can make your own just need the proper tools.  I know that my apex runs at a higher volatge than the regular usbstuff and i'm not sure what the Reefkeeper runs at ... but the higher voltage means longer distances.

I think DA says 10-15 ft ish.  double check this info but its what i remeber from when I was dewciding what unit to buy.

If you send me a photo of the end of the bus cable I can make you a cable, or you can cut it and splice colour for colour with some cat5 or something.

even without tools you can just splice the phone cord so the pins are straight through on both ends. just make sure to test with a multi meter or test light to make sure you have them pinned out right.

They have told me before they can provide custom length cables as well which may be cheaper then going and buying the crimping tool for 1 cable.
