just received my new reef octopus skimmer today and had a question about the outlet pipe.  The manual says that it need to be in 6-10 inches of water but not cover the outlet pipe. problem is that when i have it sit in that level of water to not cover the outlet pipe it is extremely tight to get the cup off.

The model is nwb-150. Is there any performance problems from having it sit under water around 1-2 inches?? can i install a pipe to extend the outlet pipe or will this create unwanted back pressure. would installing a tee at the end of the pipe help.

I have mine sitting in 9" of water and the out put is about 1/2" to 3/4" in under the water line and it's working great! I have been thinking about putting it a little lower but why fix it if it ain't broke! ;D

From what I can see from the skimmer and manual, there is a pipe that goes from the output elbow to the gate valve to control the output. This is at the right height for the water depth from what I can see. But as other say as well, they have theirs under about a 1/2" of water.

You NEED a minimum amount of water for a skimmer to sit it or you will have performance issues. It will need a minimum of 6" to work, but may need more depending on your water. Also keep in mind that there is a 3-4 week breakin period before it is working properly.

HERE is the link to the manual for the skimmer for those who want a read.

Thanks guys. After another carefull measurement it looks like my outlet pipe will be under the water by about 1/4 inch water. I have it running in vinigar water now to help speed up the breakin period. Even running in vinigar water I can't believe the difference in skimmers. Can't wait to get this thing online.

You can cover the outlet pipe with no issues. The higher the water level is from the 6” point the less range you will have as far as adjustment. The instructions are rather poor and misleading for this model.

I have the same skimmer but run mine so the outlet is just above water level works great. Bill from incredible aquarium is ordering me a neckextension and a outlet vent for the skimmer.  Its kinda noisey with the water splashing in the sump

Right at the bottom of the neck.  Great skimmer.  Wish it was big enough for my bigger tank.
