I don't because I'm trying to get my no3 up a bit. I don't recommend shutting yours off

Ya, TMah has an unusual problem, I run mine 24/7 and run a sulphur denitrator. He may have to dose no3.

I'm going to see if the slight changes I've made will do the trick or not first. Its really only been two weeks since I've made the changes. So I'm going to give it another 2 to 4 weeks and see where my levels are at first.

The major reason why i don't want to stop water changes is for the replenishment of all the other elements i am not dosing for. I'm afraid if i stop all together that i will have other problems arise

I thought about that. But I really hate dosing blind. And I don't want to get into a whole other set of test kits.

I'll be monitoring my system closely over the next few months to see if I can seriously reduce nutrient export without my growth rates suffering. I have a feeling this may take me well into the fall to figure out a good balance.

Will keep updated as we go.

Started using hydrated lime in my ato on Friday.
So far so good.
CA 420
Alk 8.3
Seems like no side effects from switching to the hydrated lime.
But I might need to start using a bit more vinegar in my ato mixture to keep my alk a bit lower. Seem to have crept up 0.2 in 4 days

Wouldnt it be more beneficial for corals to have your alk at 8.4 and cal at 420, since thts a balanced level where the corals absorb the most? Not like thats the only balanced level, just thinking out loud lol.

That's true. But I'd like to lower both a bit. Since the system Is a ultra low nutrient system. Higher alk levels can burn sps. I'm treading a fine line with alk in the mid 8 range. With me having issues with no no3 and po4. I should be in the 7.5 range.

But it's been a rough summer for my tank. I ended up losing some high end and wild pieces in my tank SSC, most my Wolverine, red planet, my gold mille, pink Floyd, blue matrix, Pearlberry, a few of my clams, pink mille, fire and ice mille, red dragon. Most my purple dragon, bonsai, most my rainbow loom and the most upsetting of it all. My gold Buddha.

Mostly my fault. I had changed too many things at once for me to narrow down the issue in time to save the above pieces. I should've known better.

Long story short. Due to my system being ULNS. My alk spiked to about 8.8 and caused most of the above to melt literally in front of my eyes. If my system wasn't running at such low nutrients, I probably wouldn't have lost those.

I tried to chase that magic number of 2-3ppm no3. Even though my system wants to run at 0 no3 and 0 po4. I've accepted it and will move on.

Lesson learned and lesson to be had here. Only change one thing at a time, and allow a few weeks to see if there are adverse effects first before doing more.

Wow sorry to hear that eric! I kinda know how you feel tho, losing a bunch of pieces, it really is heartbreaking. Hopefully everything bounces back for you.
