Just trying to get ideas on a quarantine tank.. what do most of you do? Do you have one always running or is there safe ways of setting up a quick quarantine tank. Seeing as i dont have alot of room a safe quick set up would be more ideal if possible.that or put a 29gall under my 180 in the stand. Dont know yet.

Now that i have implemented a QT tank to my regular routine, i have a couple of tanks that i use.  i have a 10 gallon for smaller fish, and a 60 gallon for larger fish.
I dont leave it set up all the time.  When i need to use it i just 3/4 fill with water from my DT and fill the remainder with fresh RO water so that i can have lower salinity in QT.
Its also a way to get in an extra water change on my DT.

For filtration i just use a HOB Filter with Floss and a sponge as well as a powerhead for circulation.  These get cleaned out once the tank is emptied again and ready for next use.
I have only used this method once so far.  Seemed to work well although i probably should have kept the fish in it longer than i did.  But they showed no signs of illness and ate well, so i think im good.

I did the same as Dave Solo, partially filled from display tank and topped up with external filtration. Had no issues with water quality. Cleaned well when emptied.  I use the same 30 gal tank for mixing my salt water for changes.

I have a qt always ready to go and have just left it running. I still add to plan fish to my DT so I figured it was best to have it always ready. It's a 30 gallon with a flu all canister filter and a couple pieces of live rock dedicated to the tank. I have a fish room mind u so space isn't really a issue. The water on its own can handle one or two small fish at a time on its own. However if u have bigger fish in qt u need to do constant, daily or every other day water changes if u have no place for bacteria to culture itself. A qt is a must in my mind as stuff like ich is a real bitch lol. I qt' d all my fish for seven weeks and they looked great and left the tank without fish. When introduced them back in I had ic within a week again:( lesson learned now they always get qt for 10 weeks, not worth the hassle to take shortcuts imo

All fish purchased from LFS are infected with ich. I would say that over 90% of the fish purchased from other private sources are infected with ich. Quarantining a fish will not cure marine ich.

I have a 23 gallon QT for corals and small fish, with heater and HOB skimmer. If needed for larger fish or demanding corals, I can convert my 50 gallon refugium to a QT.

I quarantine all corals and other inverts in "batches", for a minimum of 30 days (no fish in QT). Ich will die without a host. I quarantine and treat for ich all new fish additions.

I have several 10 gallon tanks that I keep cleaned ready for use.  I keep a sponge in my DT sump that is ready for the QT when I need it and I drop it in the QT when I set it up.  I also use a HOB filter.  To help me with the possibility of ammonia spikes I add "Stability" to keep adding useful bacteria.  The sponge however usually keeps things under control.  I use a new sponge every time I set up a QT so I don't run the risk of adding bad pathogens into my DT.

i treat with cupramine,  id say ur on the ball with treating all new fish regardless of where it came from.,my problem came from a fellow reefer that was oblivious to the fact he had ich, i saw the fish and not any visible signs of it, any way, sorry to take away from the initial post, i would like to add if ich is ever a problem dont just wait 30 days...... the eggs can stay dormant for up to 90 in some reported cases, there is a huge thread and debate elsewhere about it. just do ur research.

You are right. For future coral additions I will follow a minimum 8 weeks quarantine in a fishless tank. Thank you.

No worries I'd just hate see someone else go through what I have lol. We can all learn from each other's mistakes.

I have a 30 set-up for water changes and could be easily converted but I've never quarantined. Never had a problem so far.

I won't trust. Tomonts (encysted phase) could be buried into rock/coral pores and surrounded by saltwater and other coral mucus or deutritus. A short deep may not affect them. Also tomonts can be protected by their cyst in this stage.
