Precipitate or slow leak?

Question for you guys.... just posted this over on ReefCentral as well.

I've been noticing a buildup of a hard whitish substance on the outside of my tank glass for a couple of months, at the bottom of my tank. Sometimes these patches are powdery, bone dry, and hard to scratch off. Sometimes they are moist and wipe off with paper towel. The patches always grow in a circular pattern similar to corraline algae and always start from the bottom trim and grow up/out from there. I was just scrubbing the camera roll on my phone for pictures of it but I don't seem to have any... I could take one tonight if it will help.

My girlfriend thinks that I have a slow leak somewhere on my tank, but I assumed it was some sort of precipitation. I've read that high alk can cause precipitation on glass, heaters in particular, but I've never read about it happening on the outside of tank glass. Am I deluding myself, to talk myself out of thinking that I have a slow leak? Or is something like this possible? Given how the patches start at the bottom trim (plastic rim that the glass sits in) and that they are wet sometimes, I suppose it's possible that a slow leak could drip water into that tray that then evaporates and creates these deposits... but I would like to believe not.

Since September my water has been anywhere between 350-450 Ca and 6.5-10 dKH. Lately (since November) it's been more stable due to kalkwasser addition via ATO and has been sitting around 450 Ca and 9.5 dKH. I have noticed the buildup more when the alk and ca are higher.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you may have.

My sump leaks.  It's salt creep that come up from between the bottom base trim.

I get small little circles on the bottom trim of my tank but I realized that it's from when I pull my hand out of the tank, water drips down the front and collects by the trim. Of course I wipe the glass but always forget the trim leaving these white circles... However they don't grow bigger...

Do you always get them in the same spot? If so then its probably a leak then...

It's not always in the exact same spot but usually on the sides.  Very possible that it could be water that dripped down and accumulated in the trim tray after I had my arm in the tank - didn't think of that scenario!  Also could be one of my overflow bulkheads.  One of them was a tad leaky after my initial build so I gummed it up with silicone.  It seems dry every time I check it, but there is a permanent salt stain on the paint from where it initially dripped, so it's hard to say.

Anyways, it seems the precipitation theory is debunked... thanks guys.  If it is a leak it's incredibly slow so I'm not too worried about it, but will obviously monitor closely for signs of it increasing.

had something similar happen years ago, thought the tank was leaking as dry salt was showing up at the trim on the bottom side, come to find out it was my hang on the back skimmer leaking onto my hood flowing to the corner then running down the tank and collecting in the trim. took me a while to find it.

Clean and then use scotch or paint tape. Stick the tape around the rim, covering the gap. If after few days the deposits show up under .......

I like that idea, I'll give it a shot.
