Poseidon Calibration Fluid

I am just wondering if the fluid is always 30ppt, even when say used 30-40, times or if some has evaporated over time? Does the solution get stronger? Or will it always be 30ppt? My bottle is almost 1/2 empty, I always ensure that it is tightly closed after each use, I have to calibrate every time i turn it on because it never holds its calibration, usually 1-5 ppt off. Question make sense?

Calibration fluids can evaporate, get contaminated and err, I don't use them because I had 3 bottles from 3 different manufacturers and they were all different, I only use RODI water now. I don't have a pen, I have a refractometer and a Milwaukee digital. What does it read RODI water at?

Rodi always reads at 0. When I put it in the calibration fluid it ranges from 23-32. Then I push the cal button and it is 30 again. Until it turns off and go through it again.

Doesn't sound right that you have to calibrate before each use. Read your salt water before and after calibrating with fluid then read your salt water after calibrating with RODI and compare the results.

if it makes you feel any better i left the lid off mine for a good 2 weeks and was going to toss it under this exact same assumption. I checked it vs my refractor and it was bang on 30 ppt.

Poseidon needs to be calibrated with fluid everytime im pretty sure, anytime i tried to use it w/o calibrating it read wrong. Could be different experience for others. I mostly use it to check my refractor, makes me feel better knowing i can check with 2 different methods. If you are having a hard time calibrating a trick that worked for me was to sit the bottle down and put the entire pen in and let it sit freely, it seemed to calibrate best when it wasnt moving at all.

I don't know much about the pen but I do know that I would throw it in the garbage if I had to calibrate it prior to each use, maybe someone who is familiar with them will chime in

Yes, it is the reason why I rarely use the Poseidon Salinity Pen. It was great when I was running 3 tanks as I could hop from one to the next without cleaning off the refractometer. That is the reason I do not recommend it to people. Most people only have 1 tank and it is easy, just isn't any quicker or more convenient for typical household use. You have to recalibrate it every time you turn it on.

What do we recommend for regular household use in the digital form? Milwaukee, Hanna? How often do they need to be calibrated

I have a milwaukee, rarely use it, refractometer is faster, easier and just as accurate

Digital form? I would not suggest any. I run my GHL P4 salinity probe but even that I double check with a refractometer periodically. Honesty regular use it is easier, faster and more convenient to use a refractometer.

yes that's how I do mine, I compared it to the milwaukee digital which is factory calibrated with ro water, as a matter of fact tap water works as well

Yah my poseidon pen at this point is a failcheck for my refractometer. It is a pain to calibrate it every use. It is nice having a 2nd different method of checking salinity but if you are hoping for a "pop the cap off and put it in the water" this isnt the pen for you.

seems like there is no cap off and use option

A good refractometer is a mechanical device and unless you drop or boot it around on the floor it will never need calibrating, just check it once in a while. I've had the same refractometer for ten years and except for the time I bought a bottle of calibration fluid that turned out to be off by 3 points I would have never needed to calibrate it.

I have one of these pens, just to chime in, and it didn't work from day one...I tried re-calibrating, new fluid, cleaning the tip, new batteries, etc, but I think at the end of the day, they're just junk, and sorry I bought it. It's kind of silly when a refractometer works EVERY time, and doesn't need batteries.
