My protein skimmer is located in my sump below my display. It hums like any pump, maybe more than some, but its not outrageous. My display however is in my living room, so it can be annoying when watching TV. I bought some cushy non stick bath mat to put underneath and give me some vibration isolation, but i am moderatly concerned with putting this in my tank.

Anyone have any suggestions? And putting the sump in the basement is not an option.

Ive considered this but then i am unable to take my protein skimmer out to clean it.

I wonder if i silicone a piece of acrylic to the bottom of the sump and put the skimmer on that?

I have a reef octopus.  It was noisy as hell, until I put plastic screws into the 'mufler' on the intake.  It didn't make any difference on the amount of air, but made it almost silent.

You can safely use Neoprene rubber in your sump without any consequences. Places like Rubberline in Kitchener will cut whatever thickness and size you want. It works great for cutting down any noise. Make sure your skimmer does not touch any of the side panes. That will cause the majority of the noise.

Not sure what to tell you about the air intake. For the oveflow downspouts, you can all ways turn it into a Herbie overflow. Use both your lines in the overflow as drains. One used as a full siphon and one for overflow protection. You then would have to come up the back and over the top with your return line. They have U-fittings that work perfectly for that type of setup. It will take a little work but it is well worth it.

For skimmer air intake I have found that adding on a piece of long tubing helps a ton.
