Hmmmmm........if you are running overflow prefilter boxes then I suggest you get trusted ones......many mass marketed ones by companies are garbage!!!! If you have a good one that works and your return pump matched to the overflow boxes then there is not a need for any pump to restart siphon......
I noticed that you decided to dial back your return......I know it is too late now since you are gone but doing this can cause more bubble build up......if your return does not output enough back to display then the overflow boxes run drier and cause bubbles to build up.....
Ideally you want the box that hangs in the water to be only maybe 3 to 4 inches lower to where the water level in your tank is......
I have had a lot of experience with prefilters and could maybe stop by sometime if u need help.......what type of overflow are u using? And what is your return pump?

I'm not gone yet. Lol. Leave tomorrow. I thought about that myself with the throttling back and said the same thing, if its too slow the flow through the tubes won't carry away bubbles, so I did the opposite I increased the flow of the return a bit. I have my return pump t'd off. Feeds my DT and my external skimmer. So I can control the flow to each.

The hob overflow is a DIY jobber. It restarts no problem after power outages due to the fact the u tubes remain underwater at all times.  Once flow starts it begins to siphon. Where the bubbles happen is when the tank water is spilling over into the box in my tank.  The turbulence created by falling water creates little bubbles that sometimes get sucked up and don't exit. When I get home from work tody I'm going to take a look. I'm hoping the increased flow will take the bubbles right through the tube and out. Ideally.

I get small micro bubbles through my tubes too but the flow through the tube should be strong enough to push these bubbles out......what is the siphon tube? 1" round tube bent like a U ?
If you open your valve wide open on your return to the display, will it overpower the prefilter box and flood the tank?

Yes it will. I have a mag 9 return. Half to skimmer half to dt.  I dialled back the skimmer GPh and this increased dt flow. Prob solved. So far.
