Moving!

mid summer im faced with the task of moving my tank 600km to a small town outside of cornwall, im just wondering if anyone has ever moved with there tank? and how did you go about it!? how do you suggest i go about it?

im going to be using a new display tank but my current stand, also i hope to use my current sand but all new rock. so i may be dealing with a cycle which prevents be from moving everything in one shot....

ive allways dedicated 1 whole day for moving tanks, its gotta be the last thing you tear down and the first thing you set up, lots of bags/tupperware/masonjars with plenty of room for water and air. watch putting coral with other coral and fish cuz the coral will attack anything in such tight quarters, if you have 2 vehicles going i would set up a tank at a friends house and bring your livestock on the second trip to shorten their "packaged up" time try to keep your liverock wet with wet towels or something so you have full filtering power when you restart, then watch your nitrates for a couple months. its not easy moving tanks, especially long distances. good luck! using new base "dead" rock will be dangerous and challenging,  if you have a sump in the new tank, put your old rock in the sump, to get your livestock in there in a timely fashon your gunna need live rock.

years ago when i lived with the wing ding ...we did a move from sarnia to grand bend  we used big garbage pails and we lined it with new garbage bags and filled it with the water and sand and corals  yud have to get a bunch of them so there not to heavy

i used half a dozen rubbermaid containers to move a 90g. i moved about 70 gallons of water and 90lbs or rock covered in corals in 5 of them and had all the fish in another one for around 5 hours with just a small air bubble with the fish. i did not re use the sand, i replaced it with dry sand.

Thanks guys, I think what I will end up doing is pre-curing some of my new dry rock, and I will add my current live rock just for the first month or so. also I may leave my fish and more prized coral here with someone while im getting the tank setup, but im going to try and do everything in one shot using 5gallon pails

With the length of your move I assume you are planning on doing a single 1 way trip.  Unless you have some special fish I would probably look at selling them before the move and buying new after the new tank is setup and in place.  If you want to keep them then get some of the battery driven air pumps and stones to keep the water moving.  I have moved several tanks over the years and as suggested can be a full day job.  Also when moving this is a great opportunity to improve your setup, buy a larger tank, drill for overflow's, build the rock the way you've always wanted, etc so not having to rush to throw it all back together when you arrive after a very long day will help everything go more smoothly.

the current tank is a 45 cube (you can see it in the member intorductions) and my new tank is a 75gal 36x24x20 tank i had NAFB make,  the key was reusing my current stand which i made oversized in anticipation of an upgrade. i already have the battery driven air pumps for the fish so they can come.
asfar as other upgrades go, i will be having a sump room, im adding to my DIY LED fixture and ill be getting a set of dosing pumps. and i might just be using my cube as a refugium/frag tank

i just made a BRS order and picked up ZEOstart to replace my Elose pro skimmer, and to help with the cycle, i also picked up there Zeobak to use for the first months to insure a healthy diverse bacterial population, ive been wanting to try more zeo products so i figured now was a good time
