montipora questions

Where do montipora such as sunset monti and rainbow monti do best? I bought both frags from the last frag fest. The sunset monti was on a plug abd the rainbow placed on a skull ornament(really cool touch). I placed the sunset at the top and the rainbow at the bottom. The sunset showed some growth but has lost some of the orange. The rainbow on the other hand has had rapid grpwth started from a 2"frag on top and has since covered the whole skull but the blue is a dark red to a brown but the polyps still have there colours. I tried moving the rainbow to the top but pokyps started losing color? So im kinda curious if my sunset should be toward the bottom. Any input would be great! Its about 18" from the sand bed to the water line and im running 6t5s , the top of my rockwork where my higher light sps are is about 7-8".

I have both of mine relatively shaded at about 15" down, and they grow very well, I've heard the higher you move them the better colour you get but salty will have to chime in

The rainbow monti is a beast, it will thrive anywhere in the tank.  If it isn't getting the lighting it wants, it will crawl out of the tank, smack you in the face and make you change your lighting. 

The sunset wants lots of light.  If shaded it will go very dull.  If in bright light it will be almost florescent.  I don't think you can bleach that one, but it is definitely more sensitive than the rainbow.  Glad to see it really took over that skull, I have a few more for this year's fest but they were in the frag tank and I've sort of been neglecting it...so they have to go back to the DT to colour back up

Yeah the rainbow went crazy with growth, just not getting the blue i want.. starts coming out at the base then slowly fades to red.

Give it more light.  I got rid of most of it, as it seems to look best on new growth, and somewhat bland on the old growth.  However where I was blasting it with light it stayed blue/red like a good superman monti almost.
