Millepora polyps

I have a question for you guys about mille polyp extension.  My milles have always been super furry, but they don't have the long and hairy polyps that I've seen on some of your tanks (Salty, Jroovers).  What sort of factors affect how "long" mille polyps will get?  I'm talking for the ones that look like they are half an inch long.

My polyps just short. I'm wondering if it's maybe due to the strong flow?  Or maybe it's the fact that my nitrates aren't 0, so the polyps don't feel that they need to extend as far to catch food?

Do you feed reef roids at all? I find sps really get furry if you are feeding them reef roids just before lights out.

That is a good question, I've been asked this before, but I don't think my milles have polyps that extend any further than the next person's.  I think when they are generally happy (good nutrient balance, good flow, good light), they will generally have good polyp extension.  Maybe a coral that isn't getting an adequate amount of those things, or too much, might not present as totally happy, but typically milles in my experience are pretty tolerant as far as SPS goes.  Are you noticing this in just one mille, or several?

I feed my fish daily and my bio load is a bit heavy for my total water volume so my coral get lots of fish poop for food. I also feed my coral marine snow a couple times a week and acro power which is amino acids once a week. And I try to feed reef roids or live rotifers once a week. Glen even commented on a pic of one of my frags and how hairy it was during the day and that he should start feeding during the day. The only thing I feed during the day is the live rotifers and usually on a Saturday afternoon when I can enjoy there even more extended polyps. My nitrates are not zero either they are at about 5ppm at the moment. It is awesome to see this polyp extention.

I didn't even know I had polyps on my corals until I saw photos of them yesterday ;)

I do feed reef roids although I've been having a bugger of a time getting anyone to get any in for me (hint hint).  Does it help?  I dunno, but I feed around 1am, and the things look like exploded spaghetti at night (just not so pronounced during the day).

I got lots of ReefRoids.  I know Jerry is heading my way Saturaday, if you want to stop over at his place I can send him back with a few for you to pick up.

when you feed, do you just mix into the water column or spot feed?

One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of corals are identified and sold as millis when they actually are not.....i have a couple pieces sold to me as millis but i dont think they are..... i see prostata and vermics often confused for millis. I think that millepora has become so common that anything that resembles it will called such.

I do the same as Jerry but when I feed live rotifers I turn my return pump off for a an hour and about a half am hour later they just explode.

I spot feed with a turkey baster to larger colonies, then spot feed the micro pellets to lps, and figure the rest sort of just gets around the tank.  If I didn't have returns on I would just broadcast feed.

All good info folks, thanks! I have a jar of roids but I rarely use it.  I've tried spot feeding it as well as broadcast.  The two corals I have right now that I know could have more extension are a sunset mille and a prostrata.  I previously had a pink mille that behaved the same way but it didnt survive my move.
