$4 is on the expensive side.  About $3-$3.50/lb should be easy to find.  Doesn't sound like a big difference, but it starts to add up!

4$ a lb isnt cheap

3$ used to be the going rate for 'used' liverock, but i know for my last batches ive had to do 2.50 or id never sell it..

'new' marco rock is only 2.99 per lb i believe

Just don't buy from a store, then you won't have to pay those crazy prices :)

Sometimes i trust a store more than a random joe tho... id rather get it from a reputable dealer thats keeping it in the right water, and not tap water and filling if full of phosphates and crap. Know what i mean? Sometimes the extra bit saves u headaches and time in battlimg algae problems...thats my outlook on it atleasst lol

Paying for the piece of mind i guess.  Though most of the rock I've seen for sale comes from established systems that have been running for years.  Rather low risk i would think.

Depends on the system, were they using RODI water or just tap water. Never know i guess lol

Don't add straight to system? Just put in container with heater and powerhead, see what comes out of rock.

You trust a store eh, well I know for a fact that some stores use Tap water because it's cheap and the rock isn't gonna be there long term.
