i went over to MOPS today and picked up a small container of kalkwasser powder. ive read a lot about it, and it looks interesting. I have a 15 gallon ATO reservoir so I added 2 tsp of the Kalkive concentrate after mixing up a gallon of Kalk water. Anybody have any experience with Kalk?

I know it says to go 2 tsp per gallon. I went 1 per 7 gallons lol. I will be monitoring the water closely. Would you up the concentration after a week? Or depending on results

Also keep in mind if you leave it mixed in a container it tends to settle. Will need to be circulated or "stirred"
I used for a while and it tended to plug up ato lines.
And along with what Hark said, if you're dosing anything, you need to be monitoring and/or testing your levels.

Always on the results....nothing Wong with your approach either of start small and increase. Do you have a ph monitor?

Kalk is a good and is proven, but once your demand increases it is more difficult to dial in to manage your consumption rates.

Many have moved onto 2part with dosers, since it is more precise and won't be dependent on evaporation rate which can vary depending on conditions.

Just my opinion, but if your goal is to grow out sps, I would look into dosing so you won't have to upgrade later.

ive use kalk off and on for years now, even though places like brs suggest adding it to your top off,my expensive tunze ossmosolater strong discourages this, they even void the warranty on the pump if you do so,i have always mixed it in a 5 gallon pail 1-2 teaspoons per gallon, mix it up,not shake the shit out of it,wait for the water to clear, once clear the water has reached its saturation point and what isnt used will fall to the bottom in a slurry,i syphon off the clear solution then either slow drip or dose it and not use any of the bottom crap

Kalk is the best way to dose via ato - keeps things steady (cal/alk/ph) keep up with monthly water changes and things will stay steady.

If kalk can't keep up the best way to go is a cal reactor

Im gonna get 2 dosing pumps and figure out my daily usage. I don't burn enough evaporation to run kalk.

How much evaporation per day/week? What is your alk/cal requirements per day/week? I think you would be surprised how efficient an ato and kalk work. I wish I would have done it years ago.

I've got about a gallon avg per day in summer and right now about 2 g per day. I dose 30 ml each alk and calc 2 part per day and I'm barely keeping up

That is almost like my tank. I was doing the same thing, I've been so steady on alk and cal since using kalk in my ato. Its actually made the hobby more enjoyable not worried on dosing and watching alk and cal yo-yo. Get yourself a rubbermaid 10 gal and an ato and life becomes better ;-)

Pending on size of tank dont have to big of a Ato container, incase something goes wrong. Like if a switch or sensor gets stuck and lets your ato go crazy and dumps 25gals of freshwater into a 75g tank(just an example). I only use a 5g bucket for my 75g, and before was only using a 3g.

My tanks 150 g and the sump runs with 30 gallons. 15 g dump would be devastating. Just bit ugly lol. I used to use a 7 g and had to fill it way too much
