Is it normal for my skimmer to do this?

I bought the Vertex Omega 150 about a week ago.  I love it.  It skims the most beautiful thick dark disgusting smelling nog you can dream of. 

My question is this: Is it normal for a skimmer to lose the foam head for a few hours after feeding?  Also happens if I have to put my hand in the tank for whatever reason, except if I put my hand in it comes back in an hour or so.

Yes that's normal, the surface tension of the water is affected

Sounds like a good reason to keep your hands out of the tank as much as possible.

Just shut your skimmer off before you stick your hands in and while you feed for 15 or 20 minutes.
