By naming a similar chalice the same name as the original piece degrades the original piece or upgrades the new piece take it how you like it but that's how it come off as. An example is Oregon tort there is so many similar trot out there and people are naming it Oregon buts it's not the same and by doing that they can sell it or more or lessen the value of the original piece.

I think a pretty easy fix is to place initials in front of whatever name you are giving your specific coral... BS or IA infront of the piece is easy enough to do.  There are so many pieces out there that have the same "name", but different obvious sources... for example, red planet comes to mind... there is the ORA red planet and so many similar pieces that are also called by many other reefers as red planet... but obviously not the same source coral.

I wouldn't be offended, if anything, flattered.  "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery", Charles Caleb Colton

I personally dont think a name is important.
When I got my undata from Jerry,  I was told it was a tyree true undata.  Thats what he was told it was.  Neither of us have any way of confirming this, so really, its just an undata.
Same with several of the other corals i have picked up.  I know that they were picked up as MRT sunset millipora,  but i didnt get them from darryl direct so i cant say that.
Hell, even the name "sunset millipora" or "sunset montipora" has been used by more than the original person.

Look in your tank Bigshow.  You have "superman monti"  or "true superman monti"
Do you think that is an original name?  Did you get those corals from the very first person ever to name it that?  Probably not.

You cant go saying that people cant use your "original" names when in fact you have some frags in your tank that you are using someone elses "original" name.

A name is a name.  Who cares.  If the piece looks good and the price is fair,  buy it.  If you dont think it is,  dont buy it.
Plain and simple.

another example is "pink floyd"
i have seen so many different variations of it.
The pink floyd you are selling is not the original pink floyd.

Define "rare" or "rare type".  We are apparently talking about comparable chalices.  If there are two pretty much identical corals, both with different "names" as given to them by different reefers or different LFSs or importers, how is there any difference but the price?  If suddenly more sources become available of the same or similar coral, the law of supply and demand is going to dictate that the price comes down... simple economics.  Unless you value a piece given a name by BS over Joe Blow by leaps and bounds... which some people will do.  But in this instance I don't think we are talking about the source of an incredibly unique coral that can be traced back to one original source... for example the original RR red dragon.

RR found and named pink Floyd and
Dave got the pink Floyd of RR, he gave RR credit by keeping it the same name,  what is wrong with that?

your not getting it... the Pink Floyd Bigshow is selling is the "RR Pink Floyd" no where did he ever go and call it "BS Pink Floyd" and now somehow there is another "IAS Pink Floyd" that has appeared.. but in reality.. its source is the "RR Pink Floyd".. Dont go renaming others corals unless you cant handle receiving some slack over it..  I for one think its BS.. hence the IAS Tyree Monti... why not just say Tyree Monti ... or RR Pink Floyd..

This thread is turning into a naming thread......I hate those.

Its all for fun guys...the proof is in the puddin!~

It isn't any fun and the viewing experince is significantly lessened unless you can frame and hang all the certificates of authenticity on the wall beside the tank!  :?

I tend to disagree about the naming, I would prefer changing the names. I have a few corals from darryl but he would probably rather i dont sell corals that i turned from an ugly rainbow of colours to a real nice soft tan/brown colour as MRT corals.

Bigshow has nice stuff, and anyone spending $200 on frags doesnt need a name to identify nice corals (I hope)

The pink floyd that I sell is the RR Pink Floyd.  It cam from the RR Pink Floyd colony (same as Bills, same as Dwayne's).  So YES, it is the RR Pink Floyd.

This IS an intereting conversation, I mean, people can do whatever they want, as it was pointed out, nothing is trademarked, however in a relatively small community, with very active channels of communication, perhaps courtesy in and amoungst ourselves would be best.

I've seen Adams corals, he definitely is making different variations of the originals lol.  ;)

For my part, I have NEVER spent hundreds of $$$ on a 1" frag before, but goddamn if I didn't just do that with BS chalice.  And the thing is -stunning- like a 10 out of 10 in regular light, RB light, UV light.  When it grows in it will VERY likely be a show stopper, or at least catch people's eye, and if they ask, I'll say it's a BIGSHOW rainbow chalice frag.  Now if they get in their head that they want a coral like that one, and to look like that one, and they wander into a store and see BIGSHOW rainbow chalice for $150 (or $300), they might very well grab it, and then be disappointed when it doesn't live up to the one in my tank.  The thing about this hobby is that the individual can be blamed (rightly or wrongly) for corals not doing well.  Seller B can just say 'well, your tank lighting isn't up to snuff, it's not the coral, it's the lights'.  So it definitely can be misleading, and here we are, a bunch of goofballs arguing over it, and I can't imagine how that can be seen as 'good' advertising or 'word of mouth'.

As for the other topic of naming/renaming etc, I really don't have an opinion since I agree that it's fairly hard to pinpoint where a coral came from, what colony it came from, who found it, who named it, if it's been renamed etc etc etc.  I mean it's unfortunate that there is red planet, tyree red planet, TRUE red planet, red planet's mom, etc.  and this is how it happens.

Just my $.02

I agree that there are standards to be kept and when someone goes out of their way to bring in very high end coral it should not be held to the same standard as the lower end stuff. Bigshow is creating a name for himself based on this standard and I can see why he would be upset.

Its like when you go to the grocery store to buy ketchup the "no name" brand is in the same bottle and the same colour but we all know Heinz 57 is the best. LOL

difference here is if you put Heinz 57 on your similar ketchup bottle expect to be served with a 7-8 figure lawsuit and hope to settle for 7 figures. None of the Tyree corals or RR corals are trademarked quite simply. We are ALL free to re-use the names as much as we want. another big thing here.... these corals were not "developed" or even "discovered" by the people naming them. They are purchased through exporters in their originating countries. Some 10 cent a day diver actually discovered them and if anything he should get naming rights.

I agree with the ketchup example! Keeping the integrity of the coral names also helps with identifying the corals lineage, which to a lot of reefers is very important. Especially when it comes to the higher end corals.
