If you had a canister filter to attach it to it looks like it would give a nice even heat. I myself have not used one. If you are having issues with stray current i would get a good ground probe. If not one of these time you could get a good poke when you out your arm in the tank. The current can mess with your corals and fish. When you say massacre what is happening?

Question for you should be. How warm is your thermostat set in your house? Tank water will be same temp if you don't have sump,in basement?

I used to have two of those on my freshwater tank. They worked flawlessly for me. When I sold the 180 they went with the tank. I had them inline on the return on both of my Eheim Pro 3 canister filters.
