So I was away on vacation, was supposed to return tomorrow but we got an emergency phone call/text tonight. The house is on fire. So got things straightened out people calmed down and decided to come home from Algonquin tonight a day early. Here's what I came home to in my basement.

Wow. You are very lucky. How did you know it was on fire?

We had gf son watching the house and the dogs. I had that tank set as my frag/ refuge on a timer for night time running. Opposite to my DT. Timer was set to come on for 6pm. At approx 6:30 he text us telling us house is smokey, he got dogs and got out of house and called fd so damage is limited to that tank, smoke damage and possibly my entire DT going down, not sure yet. I came home, got the sump back up and running but don't know if or how much pollutants got into DT and will damage anything. Will wait till morning to figure that out. Need to make water ASAP if it's alive. Lost a good 100lbs of nice live rock, a few corals, I had a wonderful orange ricordia in that tank and a couple of clowns, Darwin the daredevil and his lady. And I'm sure a good count of CC. Found the monster snail still alive and grabbed him out but will see if he's still moving in the morning or not.

I am simply stunned, to think of what could have happened and it could happen to any one of us. So glad that all are safe, sorry for the losses in the frag tank and hope the display is ok.

Thanks heath but no need. I fired up the DT and sump, when I got home things were very cloudy for a bit, saw some life in the DT under moon lights, will need to wait till day lights come on and give system a few days to see if any die off. But basicly lost Darwin and his buddy, a CC in the frag tank, about 100 GLs of well cured, lots of coralline beauty rock... The stuff I got from Jewel awhile back. And a tank with all its belonging stuff. Now how to get rid of the smell of burnt plastic?

ok If you are sure, you know that you are welcome to anything that I have here. I have to ask, was it one of the lights that you got from me,
So sorry for your loss, that is a total bummer.. will insurance cover anything, maybe we should all put extra riders on our policies'..

So sorry for your loss, it is always scary working with electricity and water. So glad it was only limited to one tank though at the moment and it was caught so quickly. As to the smell, I wonder if baking soda would help reduce it or an open dish of vinegar? I know vinegar works very well for removing paint smell but I'm not sure if it would help with a burn smell.

I have been reading that vinegar is what to use. And yes we have lots of it in stock being reefers. Not sure yet what light it was but both were on top and on timers to start at 6pm. I think from the look of the wall it was a coralife t5 hood but not sure yet, haven't looked for the burnt hood out side where the FD put it. Son text us at about 6:30 sayin house filling with smoke. So happened fast. I think fire out its self out as well with the water pumping thru system. He's a good kid and did the right thing. Glad he was home when it happened and glad to have a few good neighbours I could call to go to his rescue yesterday. One of them took him and the dogs in for the night.

I sent you a pm, I will bring the Enjo out to you, it's worked before in situations like this. Thank god for water in the tank that hopefully helped put it out, and the fire dept and great neighbours ! Small communities rock for situations like this.
