Looking for opinions on filter socks. I have used them in past briefly. But recently seeded tank with pods and stopped using socks. Is it better to run with or without? Does anyone notice any benefits or down falls?

I've tried multiple filter socks over the years and found that the Red Sea Mesh filter socks worked best for me. Having enough pods and small snails that made their way into the filter sock seemed to keep them clean. Other socks I found that I was having to clean or change them weekly and made things time consuming. I'm now not spending $ and as much time cleaning the socks.

They without doubt help filter out detritus and give the tank a polished look. The only downside is having to maintain them on a regular basis.
I switched over to Redsea filter cups and fill them with filter wool. Same results, super cheap to change out and a breeze not having to wash and replace.

I don't use filter socks, I have but they are a pain to keep clean but why I don't use them is because don't they trap a lot of good aspects of our tanks such as pods or snails?
