Emergency!!!

So I was downstairs tinkering with my tank when I accidentally turned off my return pump which is a mag 24 BTW.

I turned it back on as I have done numerous times in the past and went about my business. I went back upstairs and I noticed my water line was visible when looking at the tank. I'm thinking no big deal and went back downstairs to check on the return....

It wasn't working. I plugged it into different outlets, and nothing.... I can feel it buzzing, so I tore it apart and tried cleaning everything and I noticed a huge crack in the magnet running the length of the shaft. It didn't look new as there was some sludge in there so I reassembled it and still nothing.

I'm now sitting here freaking out at 330 am. I have no return on my tank, and I'm not sure how long I have. My sump can easily handle the overflow from the display but I need to find a replacement mag 24 quickly. Long shot here but does anyone have one I can borrow for a few days till I get a new one brought in? I don't want to risk hooking up a smaller mag and burning it out as there is quite a bit of head height to deal with. Any emergency bandaid suggestions would be greatly appreciated.... I might take this opportunity to have my tank drilled properly and have an external pump installed, but I need a fix that can buy me some time.... fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhh....

Move heaters up stairs... Run powerheads... forget the skimmer for a couple days and dose you things manually if you want

if you are really eager you can build an impromptu sump with a Rubbermaid tote next to your tank and put your skimmer in there. But then you get to set up a siphon system and that would be more headache and risk than I would want to do.

I wouldn't worry too much.

I would not worry to much. You can buy a new impeller or pick up reef keepers mag 24.

I normally keep a heater in the tank and one in the sump. That way if the sump is not running the tank still has heat.

I think the biggest submersible I have is a 12 or maybe an 18 not sure if they would even move anything upstairs....

I agree that the circulation pumps And heater are all that matters short term...

In addition i'd put a pump in the sump, using a hose to pump water from one end to the other just to keep it circulating, heaters in sump and display and you should be fine.

I feel your pain, less than a month after the 125 was running the pump went on my skimmer, immediately went into panic mode..then it got even worse, the new pumps didn't fit the skimmer.. had to get creative..

Big shout out and thanks to reef keeper and Jeffopentax. Both guys were excellent. Reef keeper brought his mag 24 to Jeffopentax, who met me late last night. This is what I love about this place. The helpful community aspect.

These guys are A1 in my books.
Big thanks to both of you guys!!!

Buy the impeller, then you will have a backup pump, doughhead.

I have one main return pump, and a secondary (smaller) one on my display. The smaller one is hooked up to a big UPS supply, it can run that pump up to 4 hours in case of a problem. It won't keep the tank full, but it keeps it circulating. I think we had a big discussion here about generators and things like that, but maybe I will order a second main pump just to have it if needed...
