Hello once again.
Some of you may already know of what I am about to write about but reminders are not always a negative thing.
I am to the point in my system that I need to start dosing the three main ingredients. Calcium, Alkalinity and Magnesium.
Went to my LFS and they gave me the Calcium and Alkalinity suggestions. All good.
Now my Magnesium was on the lower end, 1180. I began the Calcium supplement and raised my calcium from 400 to 430 in one week. I continued the calcium supplementation at the same rate and calcium held steady at 430 so I know for now to keep adding same amount.
In the second week I began supplementing the Alkalinity. In the beginning it was 7.28 dKH but with calcium addition went to 7.35.
Well adding Alkalinity solution in second week raised my Alk to 8.5. That is OK BUT my Magnesium levels rose to 1390 in that week. Now I am using Seachem's Reef Builder and found out it has ample amounts of magnesium and strontium as well.
Well the moral of this story is that had I not been properly testing and keeping records I may not have noticed this. I could have continued using the Alk supplement to get to my target of 9.0 and sent my magnesium through the roof with continued use.
As we know Alkalinity drops a lot faster than Magnesium.
I will now be making my own Alk supplement using baking soda and make my own magnesium supplement.
Now will have to research strontium.
Love this hobby.
Just an FYI from my journeys.
