coral un-browning

So I have been able to keep my phosphates down for several weeks, and I am seeing little to no improvement on my corals.

via the hanna phosphorous checker I am at 9 ppb, which by my understanding is pretty darn good no?

What else should I be checking for? My nitrates are reading less than 10, and my levels of calc, alk, and mag are all within line???

corals can take days or they can take months to color back up.. its just how it is.. keep your parameters stable and watch for improvements, if you have other pieces that are holding good colors now and continue to do over the next week or so.. your definitely on the right track.

nitrates should be lower than 10ppm ideally, maybe hold off on adding fish for a month or so and let the pellets and system kick in.

Tony,

9ppb is pretty darn good! But like duke mentioned, it's going to take time....
Also, your nitrates should be unreadable pretty much IMO.....have you noticed them dropping?

What po4 reading do you get from your rodi water??

Now that you have PO4 under control, it is all just a waiting game. It will take months before the colours and growth start to appear.

But as long as they are brown, and not white, they are still salvageable correct? Just maintain water parameters and keep it up?

That is my understanding.

I had some brown sps when we used to have 150 w metal halides on our coral system.  When I swapped the lights out for a 12 bulb t5 it took about 2 months for colour to start coming back.

Took me almost a year to get colour out of my coral.  I had to a) improve lighting (add UV), b) improve water conditions, c) direct feed and d)wait it out.

I have no idea what the actual specs are of your lighting (except that they catch fire sometimes), so I can't say if they are adequate for premium sps.  Again, it's the old "LED can't do sps".  Well.....everyone is welcome to their opinions I always say :)

His are different though, he has like 100 leds jammed under his canopy and is even contemplating adding more. I am just thinking that a pre fabricated unit might not be enough, diy is another story all together.

I don't know if you are dosing carbon , but if so it can take a while for no3 to drop especially if you are using other po4 export measures, I think patience is the key, if you corals expel their symbiotic algae too quickly it could lead to bleaching and death, changing too much too fast is going to cause a crash.
Be patient and let the beauty come.

I've bought a few brown pieces and they vary quite a bit on getting their colors back. I've had some change right away and I have one colony that has grown a bunch and the new growth has color but the rest is just starting to improve after a couple of months.

BTW the colony you got from Rick that Salty and I each got a piece of is already turning a nice blend of pink and green and I'm sure Glen's looks even better.

Not really sure exactly where nitrates fit in....I'm still cruising at an altitude of around 50ppm.

I got a piece too, it's got a nice green/ red tinge to it

Yeah I was wondering if that really was some pink coming out, I don't have that frag in an idea spot (over on the frag shelf), but it looks healthy.

I will say that I get some of the best colour from new growth...like if a colony is being stubborn I'll snip off a bit, and sometimes the new growth is spectacular, while the rest of the colony is meh.

Still, patience  :dead: is really  :dead:  what you  :dead: need to get  :dead:  good colour, I just don't  :dead:  think you can do it in a  :dead: brand new tank where  :dead:  so many things are being  :dead: changed and "fixed".  No matter  :dead:  your parameters, there's other stuff  :dead:  going on that just may keep  :dead:  you from seeing the best  :dead:  results until the tank  :dead:  matures, and no matter what anyone  :dead: says, 6 months or even a year  :dead:  is not "mature" in my  :dead: books, ESPECIALLY when things haven't been kept  :dead: totally stable.  For example I wouldn't  :dead:  think of adding something like  :dead: bacter7 because I would  :dead: totally worry I would upset the  :dead: balance that I have going.  Just my  :dead:  $.02 (er I guess that's a nickel now).
