Since there have been a few posts regarding Copperband Butterflies lately I thought I would revive this old thread. http://www.thefragtank.ca/forum/index.php?topic=2522.0  Or perhaps a Mod could open it up?

It has been about a year since anyone checked in, so I hope that means that everyone's Copperbands are healthy and happy and it just got boring to post about it.

If there have been mortalities, I guess it would be the point of the original thread to bring everyone up to date on life spans and possible or known causes of losses.

To that end here are a couple of qick pics through the dirty glass of my, now rather large CB who continues to be a good citizen with all LPS, SPS and clams in my tank and still demolishes any Aiptasia he can get his snout on.

Mine has been in the tank for the last year and a half and is doing fantastic.

Nice!

For so long the book was sudden death after 8 months to a year...better foods and nutrition now seen to make the difference.

I want one, but need to see it eating dried food first and know the owner has had it for awhile

I'm pretty sure Jroovers told me his kicked the can.

Yes, mine did unfortunately.  I had it I think for a year roughly, might have been a bit longer than that, I'd have to look back.  It always ate well, and it ate from my hand.  It ate aptasia and I would rotate live rock into the display for it from my sump which it happily grazed on.  It kept getting skinnier and skinnier despite the fact I was hand feeding it Mysis twice daily and it wasn't under any stress from other fish.  Not sure why, but it just wasted away despite it getting more than enough food.  Sad really, I love these guys but would have a hard time trying another one.  I've heard live black worms are the best food source for CBBs, not sure if anyone can get them around here though.

Yours by the way looks like a fatty, nice and healthy!

Do you treat yours initially before introducing into your display?  I didn't with mine as it seemed healthy and strong, but maybe a parasite or something could eventually lead to it wasting away and dying?  I think if cyanide caught death would occur sooner than 1 year, but I could be wrong there.

Having a CBB for 2.5 years is amazing success rob!! Longest I've ever heard of anyone keeping one for....
I've tried a few.... Now i don't bother to try another because I could only get mine to eat frozen foods. I found I cannot feed this enough daily and keep my parameters in check for what corals I wanted to keep also. I also very much enjoy having zebrasoma tangs in my tank and they never played nice with the CBB IME. The last CBB I had lasted about a year but I had to cut back feeding and it faded away not too long afterwards. Very good to hear that you are keeping one alive with this much success rob!!! Hope to hear its alive an well in the months to come :)

Yes that includes the time in your tank.

Jordan...No I didn't treat him with anything, just a little time in hypo before he went in the display.  Actually your post got me thinking, I associate internal worms (obviously incorrectly) with clam  and fish eaters, triggers, eels, puffers etc.  Not so much with vegitarians and worm and simple invert consumers.

Got me thinking...and I was pleased to find that Prazipro is apparently reef safe.  Not often that something as effective as that is ok in the reef.  Perhaps some preventative dosing is in order.

I've actually treated my system in the past for RBs with Sentinel, which has praziquantel in it, which is the same med as Praizipro.  I have no idea on the comparative dosage though (i.e. treating a fish specifically versus treating a whole system for RBs and what amount is in Sentinel).  I may have added my CBB after I did this treatment though, I'm pretty sure that is the case.  I think that Prazipro is used to primarily treat gill flukes?  If I had to do it again with a CBB, I would set up a dedicated quarantine system and treat it for any possible parasites.

Definitely kills feather dusters.  I've used it in fish tanks and still had lots of bristle worms afterwards, not saying it didn't kill any, but definitely not all of them.

To those who currently have a cbb, how big and how old are they?  I've had mine for about a month and a half, previous owner had it for 4 months.  Prob about 3.5-4".  Just wondering how old it might be.  Has anyone tried adding pods for food?  Mine eats pods and mysis.  Quite healthy as far as i can tell.
