The fires thing is long in the past for black boxes. Gotta remember BRS is a retailer. They will always make it seem like a radion is a Ferrari and nothing else can be used to achieve success.

They certainly did not put the unit down, only mentioned the non rated power supply. I know from personal experience there is more than enough power to burn the coral.

I’ve seen a few of those BRS investigates. They appear as if they are unbiased but you can see the sales pitch in each one. They have great data but they are still a big brand retailer. Can’t say I have heard them say “black boxes can grow corals equally as well”.

There are definitely some nice tanks out there with black box LED's. I have even seen some in person. The lights in the OP are only a 1/3 the power of those even. Most Black Box are 300W and the ones here are only 100W and 50W for the smaller one.

Ill check the Par on the 50w when i have a chance. I have a 165w blackbox and the 50w so shouldnt be too hard to compare the PAR, still need to mount the 50w. Im interested in seeing the difference. I measured the Par on the blackboxes before and they hit ~500+

BRS did do a par test of one knock off light, the main issue they stated was the power supply, very weak and several have caused fires. If I recall 14" above the tank provided the par required for most types of coral. Personally one of my main sources of coral has many tanks and several with all black box setups, he grows amazing coral, looks incredible and is not really concerned with the bells and whistles. At the end of the day it does come down to personal preference, tank layout, environment, feeding and so much more.

I went with Hydra 52's because I found a good deal, they look slick and they give the color I like.
If power supply was the issue, it's pretty easy to build/buy a good power supply with proper output that wouldn't catch on fire. That's the thing with the chinese knockoff stuff, I've bought a fair bit of it over the years, but the only things that keep running are the brand name products. You really do get what you pay for in this hobby. Unfortunately.
