Causality

I have a 35g system with a sump I run a reef octopus BH-50 skimmer. have some soft corals, and had 2 clownfish. The system cycled for around 8 weeks and has about 40 pounds of live rock. My water conditions are perfect (Salinity, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, Ph) Added my 2 clown fish just over a week ago now and they were perfect, both ate well. Just woke up and checked my tank and unfortunately the male (smaller of the 2) had passed away and was sitting on the bottom of the tank. I have no idea what caused this to happen and am worried about the other clown now. Not quite sure what to do.

Update, my emerald crab has passed away too now, other clown seems fine and all the rest of the clean up crew are okay. Corals are all doing great as well.

Post your water parameters and someone might be able to help you. The more information you can give the better the chances of someone being able to help.

It is almost impossible to know why most fish die. Especially if 'all the parameters are perfect'. With fish that early to the tank, it could still be a new fish issue. Sometimes they do not eat enough, or look like they are eating when in fact they are spitting the food back out. Fish can survive for a long time without eating. It could also have been a parasite. There isn't much that a CUC can survive that fish will not, so it doesn't lead towards your water quality. Emerald crabs need enough food to survive. Normally that emerald would have had a snack on the clown, unless it died right before you found it. My guess is that it was already on its way out as well. Then again, you also have that identify request out there for the black blob. Maybe that will shed some light.

I'm taking my water to a store tonight to get them to test it in case my test kit is reading wrong or such. Thanks for the help!
