I ran rox carbon for over a year.. I haven't been running carbon for over 6 months now.. No difference here to report. Def not required for a nice tank.
I'll guarantee that the colour of your water has changed, probably so slightly that you haven't noticed. I know mine went from piss yellow to crystal-blue-clear. I was -amazed- at the difference when looking at before/after shots.
I don't think it needs to be run 24/7 that's for sure, maybe once every couple of months. On the new tank I plan to run gfo 90% of the time and then just run carbon for a week every once in a while. I just leave it running because 'why not?'

ah thats a good point, maybe ill start running it again, i haven't done a water change in a very long time so when i do ill fill a nice clean white bucket and see if you can see any yellowish tinge compared to fresh salt water.

Heh mine was yellow-brown when the tank was 'neglected'. You have to admit a tank on carbon is a wonderful clear thing
