I run carbon on my tank 24/7. I have a BRS Dual Reactor. GFO in one side and carbon in the other. I run about 2 cups of carbon on my 180G and change it out once a month.

Same.  Been running gfo and carbon non stop for over a year and a half.  Once I saw the difference in tanks of people that run carbon it was a no brainer.

I ran rox carbon for over a year.. I haven't been running carbon for over 6 months now.. No difference here to report. Def not required for a nice tank.

I'll guarantee that the colour of your water has changed, probably so slightly that you haven't noticed.  I know mine went from piss yellow to crystal-blue-clear.  I was -amazed- at the difference when looking at before/after shots.  :)

I don't think it needs to be run 24/7 that's for sure, maybe once every couple of months.  On the new tank I plan to run gfo 90% of the time and then just run carbon for a week every once in a while.  I just leave it running because 'why not?' :)

I've been running GFO and carbon on my 90 gallon since it started up last Nov. (2012). 1 run the 1.5 cups of carbon for about 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off. The carbon is exhausted after 3 weeks so that's why I'm on that schedule. The GFO is ran 100% all the time and changed out usually every 6 weeks. So I can change them both at the same time and I only have one mess to clean up!

ah thats a good point, maybe ill start running it again, i haven't done a water change in a very long time so when i do ill fill a nice clean white bucket and see if you can see any yellowish tinge compared to fresh salt water.

Heh mine was yellow-brown when the tank was 'neglected'.  You have to admit a tank on carbon is a wonderful clear thing :)
