Look at the weight of the 2 gallons of alk. No doubt that the brokerage fees have gone up, but you also have to remember the weight of things

Each gallon is 7 lbs...so 28lbs for just the mix. Try and get something of that weight shipped for anything less then what was paid. Not saying that their prices haven't gone up, and not saying that I may start looking elsewhere as well, but there shipping costs for something that heavy is not outrageous. FedEx International Ground based on 28lbs is $49.10 and that is before brokerage and other weights/size factors.

I agree with petercar. I had my order shipped to the ferry for free, will pay the ferry $5 and likely the border guard wont charge me tax. Before I ordered i checked and brokeage + taxes to ship to canada was $105.
yes, ferry is great, can't drive over the bridge and back for $5, and i live 15 minutes away, and most places ship free in the US., and don't usually get charged tax unless its over $200
A nice thing about buying online in the US is no tax for purchasing online from a different state.  Unlike canada where they collect there state tax.

I think BRS sticks sales tax on our orders...

Shipping to Canada:  All Canadian orders received before Thursday @ midnight are shipped on Friday. The shipping program we use to save you brokerage fees only allows us to ship on Fridays.  Canadian orders will arrive at your door with no extra fees due. Here's how: BulkReefSupply.com pays all brokerage charges out of our pocket to UPS. We also pay the GST, customs duties, and other Canadian government fees however these are passed on to the customer via a flat 15% Canadian tax assessed at checkout on our site. In a nut shell we pay brokerage and you still pay your government fees, but you know the cost up front and there is no surprise bill presented when the package is delivered at your door. The 15% tax rate is based on the Ports of Entry our shipments pass through Canadian Customs and on the duties required on the wide variety of products we ship to Canada. Please note all prices on BulkReefSupply.com are in US dollars, not Canadian. Canadian orders are not eligible for any Free Shipping offer.
if you get it shipped to Canada ya.  Im talking online sales state to state.  If i vet it shippednto Michagan there are no taxes till i hit the border.  If i lived in Michagan i would never pay tax on a brs order.

So that quote was lifted from the BRS group buy that we have every month, but tell me then, what is the real benefit of the group buy? If we get drilled on shipping and brokerage and taxes vs. getting it across at the depot via ferry?

discounted pricing on all items?

i would hardly say your getting drilled on shipping.. buy anything from the states and they will charge you 25-50$ shipping to canada, its just the way it is. not everyone in Canada has the luxury of crossing the border whenever they want to pick up packages either.

and dont be fooled into thinking that shipping it to the US and bringing it back yourself will keep you from paying taxes, duties, and tariffs, when you legally declare all items your bringing back there is the chance you will be forced to PAY the duties and taxes still.

The discount for being in on the group buy ranges for 0-10% it seems. That being said, if I bought the order on my own and had it shipped for free to the border and bring in across via ferry and only get lucky 50% of the time, it seems that this would be a much more profitable endeavor...

The difference is that via the group buy you are 100% forced to pay 15% taxes, brokerage, and shipping.

If you get it shipped to the border and qualify for free shipping, even if you get dinged, you are at maximum 10% of your total order behind what a group buyer would have gotten, +5 bucks for the ferry and say 20 bucks for gas and your time driving there.

It just seems like people have had greater success rates than 50% on getting things across with no issues which makes me wonder.

Am I missing something?

yu dont reaslly get a discount on everything at a group buy.  ..yu can tell. by goin to look at a item.  and if its discounted at a group buy it was show as low as price. if that dosnt show its not discounted anyway  group buy or not ..but yur not paying any fees for a group buy ..yu will still always pay shipping if its to canada ..yu will have to order and pay by the friday right after the group buy day which is a tuesday

look at it like this.. forget the USA part, when you need to make an order for supplies if you just order it, you will pay shipping to canada which includes duty and tariffs in the price.. if you are part of a group buy you save 10% give or take.. see the advantage? 10% discount. ps. you can still save 10% and get it shipped to the usa while participating in the the group buy..

u want to drive to the states and get it, assuming your lucky and live in London its 30$ in fuel, 6 bucks for the bridge fair, 6 bucks for the shipping depot... 3-4 hours of your time, and the possiblity you will get nailed at the border also so imo shipping is reasonable when you compare with what you will be spending.

how on earth are you profiting from spending money btw? lol

and you way over think everything... lol

So by my understanding;

Group Buy:

- 15% flat Canadian tax
- Shipping
- Group buy pricing (0 - 10% off)

thats it, no surprises no nothing, shipped to my door.

-------------------------------------

On my own shipped to the depot:

- Potential for free shipping (175 bucks or more)
- 5 dollar ferry fee, gas and time to the border
- might get it by customs with 0 hassles
- no taxes of any sort unless tagged at border

Is this correct?
