Bfofre 90 Gallon Reef Build

So.. I'm trying to practice patience,  not my virtue!  But I'm in collecting mode,  gathering all the things I need for a successful build!  And believe me that is much more responsible then the last tank years ago that I designed in the fly! 

Anyway,  started dry fitting my return manifold today. 

As I dry fit my plumbing I had a bright idea to add a run just for water changes.  Through a garden hose!  I can divert water through the hose into the basement disconnect it  and or,  attach it in opposite to refill the tank from the basement!
This will save lugging any water up into the living room    I hope!

Anyway,  thought I'd at least share my little bit of progress...  Waiting for more stuff to arrive from BRS

the waterhose.  ..yu will need to find one with plastic ends...not brass. ..no metals goin into yur tank

Brass?  Do you think that water passing by the brass hose fitting,  approx 1/2 inch of exposure for only a moment during refill.. ..  Would this cause issues?  Leaching or deposits into my tank?  Guess I can't see it..  But please tell me your experience with that..

I see your point for the short exposure. But corrosion and local leaching will continue even after you refill your tank. Corrosion from air, corrosion from salty environment, etc. Is it possible that corrosion deposits will be flushed in your tank? Maybe yes, maybe  not. Play safer. Use non metallic parts for anything in contact with your saltwater.

The plastic in a garden hose isn't good either.  Ever drank out of one?  You can sometimes taste the plastic!

Yes,  all the time..  I have marine grade hoses that supply my boat..  Perfectly safe!  But again,  the point being the exposure to drain water,  then re-fill water would be minutes.  And that's it!

Dry fitting my plumbing,  making sure everything fits! 

Baffles not in sump yet,  but plan is to have return chamber w/ Skimmer,  Centre chamber for return pump  &  heaters,  final chamber with fuge.

Fun,  now I have to take it all back apart and glue it!

Looking forward to filling with water soon!

Hey! That's looking pretty good! You'll be happy you did a soft to hard for the return, cuts down on the noise drastically !!
( if the dc pump vibrates atal which I have no idea)

I'm not sure either about the pump vibration.  From what I've read,  they are virtually silent.  My thinking was more along the idea a flex joint between the pump and manifold.  Many of my machines at my shop use this type of attachment to reduce stress between the pump and the manifold.

I'm going for silent,  since it's in my living room!

Just need to hook up my modded dual BRS reactor  (need to get push fittings 1/2" 90 deg),  and give my old Euroreef Skimmer a good cleaning. 

Ready for water test,  God I hope no leaks in my manifold system!

Getting excited to see it running.


Question?  Do you try and rinse the seafloor special grade sand?  If so,  how?

I would use 3 pails. 1 with the sand. 1 empty and 1 with ro water. With a cup take a scoop at a time rinse it in the cup, in the ro water. Drain and dump cup of moist and rinsed sand into empty pail. Wash rinse and repeat lol

Yes definitely rinse it.  Put it in pails and start filling with water. Stick your hands all the way to bottom and stir/churn.  Dump the water while the silt is still floating around.
