You heard correctly - light won't affect alk.  Two different unrelated questions :).  The alk is important to check, but the lights I was wondering about more out of curiousity than anything.  And yeah if you can get two measurements of alk at those times that will give a good idea of how stable it is daily.  Also try to get another measurement or two over the next two days at the same times to see how stable the level is over time, as it is consumed by corals and replenished however you replenish (dosing, calc reactor, etc).

Hard to say for sure, but as long as you do it the same way every time that is what matters.  So say you measure 8.4 at light red, 8.8 at deep red.... both values are fine, so you just need to make sure that you do the test the same way and ensure it's stable at either 8.4 or 8.8.

Ok thats what i figured. And so far no swings it stays stable at 8.4, and mg is steady at 1380.. why so high? Could it be from using H20 salt? Is it bad if the Mg is that high? Thanks for all the help
