Has anyone ordered RO/DI units from these guys? I just ordered the Aquarium II 7 stage RO/DI unit for 149.99 free shipping and also a free hand held TDS meter. Just wondering if it is a decent product?

I haven't got one from them as I decided to go with another brand but I did do a lot of research on them. Apparently they are great for the price but people had problems with leaking which was easily fixed with some Teflon tape on all the joints. So maybe just do that before hooking it up and having it spray everywhere  . Other than that there were a lot of good reviews on them and cant beat the price!!!

Thanks on the advise will definitely do that when installing. I read the reviews and the price was right. Just thought I would try and save a bit considering all the money I have spent in the last few weeks getting everything I need to set up my 90 gallon

They come with fairly cheap and poor quality filters IMO.  Also a handheld TDS meter sucks compared to an inline or even better dual inline.

FWIW I have owned an aquasafe system and handheld tds meter.  The canisters I have are still from aquasafe but I use quality filters now and a dual inline tds meter and wont look back.

I agree with Darryl. The unit will work just fine. Quality filters are imperative though and inline meters are far superior and easier to use. Not sure how much waste water the unit produces either. It can be tough watching 3/4 of the water used going straight down the drain. Not saying this unit will do that, but, it is very common with RO/DI units.

I will be adding an inline TDS meter. I had that planned just thought I would mention that they where giving a handheld and free shipping. I will definitely change to better canisters.

Its not the canister that are the problem.  Its the filters which are much more important.  Although the DI canisters they use are horrible.  Small little horizontal things.

Glad you got a dual inline meter.  Worth it in time savings and accuracy.  Also it allows you to get non color changing DI resin and save a few bucks.  At least that is what I do.

I think he already ordered it though... Surely it would tie him over at least till his first filter change? I have read about people getting good water out of them for a while. Maybe not 0 TDS but still good. I mean yeah the unit doesn't have clear housings, vertical 10oz DI stage or super expensive filters but for someone on a budget and for your first ro/di unit it seems like good value especially since the end result would be acceptable. Considering he already ordered it I don't see the point in upgrading all of it as wouldn't this defeat the point of his savings?

Did anyone get really rubbish water out of their units for the first 6-9 months? I am just trying to make a gloomy situation seem bearable, not trying to argue the point as the aquasafe systems are by no means the best choice but surely DerekL can avoid splurging from the get go as it would be a waste? .

And if your going to replace the filters, royals aquariums is having a liquidation sale  .

Yes I did order it and just got it today. And when the time comes for filter needing to be changed I will definitely get better ones. It does have a 30 day guarantee so if it is really that shitty I will send it back it also has a 3 year warrenty. As for budget I think most of us has some sort of budget or a wife. In the last month I have spent a few thousand dollars getting everything I need for this build. No matter what the water that comes out of this unit will be better then what comes out of my tap. I didn't expect that this unit was going to be the cats ass but will it produce water thats pure enough for me to use in my soon to be reef tank. Anyways I thank you all for the input.

Sounds like a good plan. You can always get better filters if you think those aren't cutting it for you. It all depends on how good you want the water and how long you want the filters to last, oh of course budget too.

I remember when I first got into the hobby and was buying what I could afford. Sometimes the advice can come across as criticism or viewed negatively. I as well have a tight budget and doing this hobby on minimal finances, but over time you will slowly upgrade. Just keep in mind that cost and issues are directly related. You should be fine with this unit.

The TDS meter read 9 with just the RO hooked up. And with the easiness of the set up and it operating the way it is suppose to I am very impressed. I took a look on BRS and for $199 they have a 5 stage thatvsdoes 75 gpd. And also seeing as I am starting to get close to the limit the wife would like to stay within. I am not much of a DIY guy even tho I am a CNC machinist so I spent a good chunk of change on the Orphek Atlantik LED pendant and controller for my lighting and seeing as the aquarium wasn't drilled I went with a LifeReef overflow box. I have used LifeReef products in the past years ago and he makes top notch products. Then the eco tech vortech mp40 and battery back up a new bucket of salt new sand and also bought 150 lbs of live rock I am now up there in cost. I did a lot kid research prior to this build and really the RO/DI unit is the only area of this build where I skimped a bit but from the results it looks as though I didn't do too bad. Anyways I may do a thread of my build not sure yet as I am sure there are tons of these threads. I am at about 30 gallons from the unit in about 7 hrs so it looks as though it will actually do 100gpd as per spec sheet and 0 on the inline TDS meter as well as my hand held TDS meter. I really do appreciate all the info you guys have given me and I apologize if I sounded defensive as I didn't intend on coming across this way. I just have to finish staining and urethaning the stand and the build will start. Looking forward to it. We use to have a 75 gallon reef and miss it.

I also bought a cheapy ro system off eBay as well for around 150$
It served me fine for 6 months+
I ended up switching it out for a 7 stage custom setup because it came with a tank I bought.
