I use a 5uM sock to filter my GFO effluent back into my sump and this is the sock after a couple months

This is it after 24 hours in bleach

Here it is after 48 hours in a bucket of water with 1/2 cup muriatic acid

Then after 24 hours in a bucket of water and 40 drops of prime

Not sure what's in Prime but this sock is ready to go again

Yikes I wonder if my GFO reactor puts out effluent like that. Thanks for sharing. Do you tumble your GFO a lot, or just average?

I actually flush out my gfo in RO/DI water with a circ pump before it goes in the tank, and run the output through a mesh bag when it's running. Never have any real discolouration, but I know I would if I didn't rinse...

Its not from rinsing. I have the same thing on my filter sock, it would brown up pretty quickly if it was a rinsing issue, mine took ~3 weeks to start going brown. Its nice to know Prime will clean them up cause mine is almost to the point where i have to pull it.

You could try using a fine mesh bag instead of the sock, I mean iron oxide isn't harmful to coral...may be different for HLLE in tangs/angels however. I don't know as if they ever confirmed a link between GFO and tang health... I try to keep the dust out because I think dinos live on it.

Yup i dont think its a HUGE deal, i mostly filter it because i had a bit of buildup on the bottom of my frag tank sump where it dumped back into the sump. So after seeing a post similar to @Pistol in the past i decided to start filtering mine. Generally isnt a huge deal either way.

I havent heard anything about GFO and HLLE, i have heard many stories of carbon causing it though.

Yes...that's correct. I run a 2-canister system and the second one has carbon. I suppose the mesh filter has 2 purposes for me :)
