Anyone else make their own food for their coral or fish? I have been making my own food for both reef and freshwater for years. The coral food Ive had amazing results with. A blend of graded shrimp and some type of amino acid/nutrient booster. The one I normally use was not in stock so I went with zoo plankton this time around.

Is it cheaper than buying frozen stuff? Or just more beneficial because you know exactly what’s in it?

I have always thought i would like to make my own food, but never had enough fish/corals to feed to try it. Now I can use it as a learning experience. When i went through all the different food that i have for the children, i realized that nearly all the food is the same, wither it is pellets or flakes, it is all the same ingredients.

I would typically do some research before I ask these types for questions. Sorry if i sound a bit ignorant.

Do you use frozen uncooked shrimp? Or, is it best to go to the seafood counter and get fresh shrimp, clams, squid etc.. And want other ingredients are needed, you mention amino acids. Do i just go to GNC and grab a bottle of 3-6-9? What do you add for the herbivores in the tank? Everything in my tank currently eats the flakes and pellets. I have tried the seaweed clips, but they do not seem to be interested.

The food I made this time around was more for coral than the fish but the fish still steal a large amount. I use frozen raw ingredients. You can buy it fresh but “fresh” has still been frozen at least once. Almost all seafood is immediately flash frozen once caught. Do not buy precooked. I remove the shells from the shrimp as the coral digest the food quicker and accept it more readily.

For the amino acid in this blend I’m soaking the shrimp in Seachem reef zoos as store did not have the regular reef booster. For herbivore fish you can ground up seaweed in this recipe but I recommend feeding them a separate staple diet as this has a high protein content.

You can add scallop, fish eggs, spirulina, garlic guard and all sorts of other ingredients. I keep it simple for mine.

How To: Homemade Fish Food

This is what I have been doing for many years. I found not much, if any of a cost savings though.

Costco I buy 4 bags of shrimp for $15. Each bag has around 50 shrimp. Around 15 shrimp fill a large ziplock bag. The additives cost $15 as well. 4 capfuls for each bag. The ziplock bag is around double the size of the mysis shrimp packages and other coral/fish frozen foods (10-$20). So $30 in ingredients creates around 13 ziplock bags of fish food. 12 bags in a store would cost say $130. Much more savings in my opinion. The more ingredients you add the more expensive it will get but the more you get out of it.

True.
I buy all fresh at a local seafood market. So I'm sure that drives up the cost of my recipe.
But I don't mind.

I’ve made my own a few times in the past and have been thinking about doing it again. I used shrimp, scallops, squid, salmon, clams, reef roids, sea weed and some Red Sea coral A & B... put it all in a blender with some RO water...this was definitely more expensive then buying it at the lfs but the fish and corals went crazy as soon as the food hit the water.
